Basics of Recording
There are a few things to consider when you are getting ready to record. Your recording quality will be improved if you can address these areas.
- External Microphone - one that plugs in to your device or connects via bluetooth
- Something fancy is not required, but sometimes the quality of sound is much improved with an external mic versus a built-in mic.
- If you have a wearable mic, position close to the speaker's mouth. Take care not to brush clothes or hair against mic head to avoid a loud, shuffling sound.
- If you have a mic on a stand, keep it as close as is comfortable. Remain facing the mic to maintain good recording volume. Be careful to not turn or back away.
- Speakers - to hear the playback of audio; does not need to be external
- Earbuds or headset with built-in mic - these would be in place of the above
- Computer or device with audio recording program/application/feature
Equipment Needs
- Small, Quiet space - to minimize background noise
- Carpet, curtains, soft surfaces (i.e. fabric) - to prevent reflections of sound (echo)
- Closed door, windows - to block loud, outside noise
Environment Considerations
- Speak clearly, with good annunciation.
- Pause to leave space between words and thoughts.
- Use a normal level of volume when speaking - not too quiet and not too loud
- Keep a water near by - in case a cough or tickle sneaks up
