On January 15, 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated was created on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. Alpha Kappa Alpha, also known as AKA, is the oldest greek-letter organization founded by college educated African-American women.
It's purpose of creation was and still is to:
*Cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards
*Promote unity and friendship among college women
*Alleviate problems concerning girls and women
*Maintain a progressive interest in college life and
*to be of service to all mankind.
For more than a century, this prestigious sorority still lives through the motto, by merit and by culture, and proudly displays it's colors of apple green and salmon pink while changing the world one region at a time. Some of its most notable members are Civil Rights Activist Rosa Parks, Actresses Phylicia Rashad, and Jada-Pinkett Smith, Professor Donda West and our country's first lady Michelle Obama.
