The beginning of e-mail was in 1971 just two years after the internet began. Two programs were developed which could send messages across the ARPANET. The programs were SNDMSG and READMAIL. The first program which had sending and receiving capabilities was the BANANARD, first named WRD. E-mail addresses like the ones we use today were introduced in 1984. Two other important dates were 1989, the date that commercial e-mail was introduced by MCI and Compuserve, and 1996 , the year web mail was introduced.(Campbell,1998)
There are many implications for education. The obvious ones are communication with peers all over the world. Also, students can learn how to type and write while using e-mail. Another use could be to let the students e-mail experts on subjects they are researching or subjects they are interested in.
