Chapter 1

 

Input Devices

This website would be very valuable to you because it deeply describes what input devices actually are.  Also, it gives examples of some input devices and links you to pictures of the actual devices.  It also gives you definitions that you might need to know while using an input device such as, input, keyboard definitions, mouse definitions, and also many others.  This website will definitely give you good information about input devices and make you want to learn more about computers in general.

 

This very much agrees with the textbook.  It gives the same list of commonly used input devices.  They both also explain that a computer would not be a computer without any input devices. They really don’t conflict at all. 

 

Notebook Computers

This website would be very valuable if you were looking for a notebook computer or just wanting to learn more about notebook computers.  It gives a very deep definition of what a notebook computer or also called mobile computers actually are.  It also gives you four vendor reports and ten products (notebook computers) and details about that specific product.  It gives you the company’s that make notebook computers such as apple, dell, hp, and many others. 

 

This site definitely agrees with the textbook.  They tell you all the different names for a notebook computer such as, laptop, mobile computers.  Also it gives you information about what you can actually do with a computer like this.  There doesn’t seem to be any major disagreements about notebook computers. 

 

Chapter 2

 

History of the Internet

This site would be very valuable to use because it doesn’t go into great detail about the history of the Internet but then again it doesn’t keep it too simple.  It gives the name of what they used to call the Internet (ARPANET), and goes into detail about the computers that first used it. It also gives you fun facts such as who was the first to use the ARPANET. 

 

This website concurs with the textbook very much, it gives the names of the same four universities who used the internet first.  They both also give the same name of what the name of the Internet used to be.  They don’t seem to disagree at all.

 

 

 

How the Internet Works

This site would be very worthwhile because it starts out with a simple definition of how the Internet works, then has two links that keep getting deeper information.  The second link is the simple process and then the third goes very deep about how it actually works.  It tells you what a protocol, a sever name, and file name has to do with the Internet.  It also describes how you can connect to the Internet with DSL, a cable modem, or a phone-line modem.

 

The book and this site conflict a little bit because the site actually goes into detail about how the internet connection is made and it tells you about the different ways of connecting (DSL, cable, phone-line).  But, the book only describes the different ways of connecting.  The only agreement they have is about the different ways of connecting.

 

Chapter 3

 

Application Software

This site would be very useful to you if your are wanting to know what an application software actually is.  It gives a thorough definition of what application software is and gives you many types of software that you can use on your computer.  Also, it gives you a classification of application software. 

 

The site and the book conflict very much because the site goes into very much detail about application software and the book’s information is much more simple and to the point.  The only thing similar about these is the definition and it still isn’t the exact same. 

 

Word Processing Software

This website contains the information that you want if you want to know about word processing.  It gives a very good definition and explains some of the different features of word processing.  It also talks about how it lets you format and use many other features. 

 

The site and the book are very much a like it is just that the site goes into a little bit more detail.  The only think that is different is that the book has a picture to show the different features of word processing. 

 

Chapter 4

 

The Motherboard

This site would be very valuable to you if you want to learn more about motherboards.  It gives a thorough definition and explains about memory chips and other things that are contained in a motherboard. It also tells you what the abbreviation for motherboard is.  It also talks about what the motherboard actually contains 

 

The book and site conflict because the site’s definition is in very much detail while the book just tries to keep it simple and organized.  They also both have different abbreviations for motherboard.    

 

RAM (random access memory)

This site gives you very valuable information about RAM (random access memory); the definition is very in depth and gives very important information that you need to know about RAM.  It also tells you how much information can be stored in a RAM and talks about how physically big a RAM is.  Also, it gives you information about why these are called “random access”.

 

The book and the site are not that much alike.  The site talks more about what a RAM actually is, while the book gives you different types of RAM’s and talks about RAM configurations. 

 

Chapter 5

 

Touch Screens

This website would be very valuable to you if you wanted to learn more about the touch screen technology.  It gives you a thorough definition and also a picture of what a touch screen actually looks like.  It also gives you some example applications that use touch screen.  Also, it tells you about all the different types of touch screens.  

 

The site and the book are very much a like. They both give definitions and examples about touch screens, the only thing different is that the site goes into more detail about both.

 

Scanners

This website would be a great help to you if you wanted to find out more information about scanners and how they work.  This site is great because it starts off with an introduction about scanning and goes into greater detail towards the end. It tells you about the scanning process and also lets you compare scanners online, if you were interested in buying one.  It also goes into great detail about the different types of scanners, such as the flatbed, sheet-fed, and many others. 

 

The book and the site are very similar because they both talk about how the different types of scanners work, not only one, but also all the different kinds.  They both also tell and show you the process of scanning something.  

 

Chapter 6

 

CRT Monitors

This website would be very valuable to you if you were looking for an in depth definition of what CRT monitors truly are.  It tells you what the abbreviation CRT really is, and also shows very good pictures of the actual tube.  It also tells you the process that it takes to make a screenfull of images with a CRT. 

 

The book and the site are similar because they both give a thorough definition of what CRT monitors are.  The book goes a little more in depth about the different sizes and monitors, how much information can fit on the monitors. 

 

Fax Machines

This site would be great for you if you wanted to know more about fax machines and how they actually work.  It starts off with a brief introduction about fax machines and also a picture of an actual fax machine.  Then, it goes more in depth about them, how you receive and a lot of other great stuff. Also, it has a table of contents that is perfect if you are looking for one specific piece of information about fax machines. 

 

The site and the book are similar only because they both talk about fax machines.  The only thing different is that the book talks a lot more about fax modems. 

 

Chapter 7

 

Floppy Disks

This site would be great for you if you wanted to know everything about floppy disks.  It gives an in depth definition about what floppy disks actually are.  Also it goes into the history and gives a background about floppy disks.  It also has a wonderful diagram showing all the different parts of a floppy disk.  Also it goes into the information about the usability of these disk. 

 

The book and the site are very similar, they both have the same information only the site goes way more in depth than the book.  They both have a picture diagram showing all the different parts of an actual disk. 

 

USB Flash Drives 

This site would be great for you if you wanted to learn more about flash memory drives, it doesn’t only talk about USB flash drives but also talks just a little bit about memory sticks.  Also, they tell how flash drives actually work.  It also tells you seven reasons why to use these instead of hard drives to save your work.  It also lets you compare prices if you actually wanted to buy a flash drive. 

 

The book and the site are very different; the book strictly talks only about USB drives in this section.  But, the site also talks about memory cards. 

 

Chapter 8

 

Graphical User Interface

This site would be very useful to you if you wanted to learn more about graphical user interfaces (GUI’s).  It has a very in depth definition of what GUI’s really are.  Also, it talks about the history and about the GUI design.  It also gives you some external links about graphical user interfaces.

 

The book and this website are similar only in one way, the definition.  The site goes way more in depth about other things and the book strictly keeps it to the definition.  

 

Windows XP

This site would be very valuable to you if you wanted to learn more about windows XP and how it started.  It tells you a very thorough definition and a lot of information about XP.  It also tells you what the abbreviation XP stands for.  It also tells you the two different editions of windows XP that are available.

 

The site and the book totally disagree, In the year that it came and the editions that are out.  The site says that there are only two editions (home, professional), while the book tells you five different editions (home, professional, PC, media center, 64-bit)
