Week 10:
Ex. 15--Epidemiology

  1. Plan your choreography carefully. Work with one bench of students (=8 or so) at a time--the others can just sit and wait. Line them up as it says to in the lab manual and rehearse each row before beginning the exercise. Make sure the necessary media is labeled and available near the student who needs it.
  2. If you take the procedure seriously, they will, and it might just work!
  3. We are using Serratia marcescens because it will work and we have it, whereas we don't have any Micrococcus luteus. Incubate the plates at room temperature.
  4. Note step 7 on p. 143 --TA's do this.
  5. We aren't doing the handwashing part of this.

one latex glove per student, one large test tube contaminated with S. marcescens (see lab manual)
Cultures:
Serratia marcescens (see lab manual)
Media:
Mueller-Hinton agar plates, 1 per student
