Introduction to 3D Modeling

What is 3d Modeling?  Simply put, it is the art of creating 3d objects on a computer.

To quote from Wikipedia :  "In 3D computer graphics, 3D modeling is the process of developing a mathematical representation of any three-dimensional surface of object (either inanimate or living) via specialized software. The product is called a 3D model. It can be displayed as a two-dimensional image through a process called 3D rendering or used in acomputer simulation of physical phenomena. The model can also be physically created using 3D printingdevices."

As it says, you can use these 3d objects to envision something from all angles that you would not be able to manipulate physically, print to a 3D printer, upload buildings to Google Maps via Sketch Up (to see the 3D buildings, look at google maps in the "Earth" filter), upload to a virtual world like Second Life and many other things. A lot of people don't realize that Google Maps has a Google Earth mode that includes showing 3D buildings in many places. It is easiest to find these 3D buildings in higher populated areas like Chicago. Google's 3D maps were recently updated. Read about it here.

I intend this web site to do 3 things:

1. Give you an introduction and some instruction to 3D modeling.

2. Alllow you to share and collaborateon your projects with others.

3. Provide a library of resources.

Use the navigation bar at the top to go to the different areas of the site.  Explore, have fun, and creat!
