St. Louis is home to many events that SIUE students can attend. The city offers a wide variety of weekly, seasonally, and yearly events. Events like Mardi Gras, Cardinals’ games, and concerts are great events to plan into your busy schedule as a student. These off campus events are a few examples of what events many SIUE students attend through out the year.

Mardi Gras:

St. Louis Mardi Gras occurs in the Soulard neighborhood just south of downtown. The event occurs once a year and is known as the second largest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States. The celebration includes music, parades, and many other fun opportunities. The event staff is very strict about underage drinking and vandalism. Soulard is a residential neighborhood and the police have a watchful eye throughout the day and night. This is a great event to invite friends from other schools for a weekend. The party is a crazy one and makes you feel like you are on the real Bourbon Street. Parking is tight and expensive, so it is best to ride the metro to the landing and catch a shuttle to Soulard. Soulard, the heart of the celebration, is 2 or 3 miles from the landing.

Cardinals’ games:

Cardnials’ games are another event that involves taking advantage of nearby St. Louis. Cardinals’ games are fun for all ages and are not too expensive for a college student’s budget. Tickets can be found for under 20 dollars. This year is a good year to go and see a game and also see the last season at the famous Busch Stadium. This is a fun event to use as an excuse to get into the city for a day or just the evening.

Concerts:

The Metro Area is very well known for the musical venues that come through. There are concerts every night of the week that are scattered between locations like Pop’s in Sauget, Mississippi Nights in St. Louis, and large concerts at the Savvis Center. Mississippi Nights, which is located near the Mississippi River, has concerts or events of some kind every night of the week. Pop’s, a bar, has concerts or a DJ’s every night of the week. These are excellent locations because

many performances are open to all ages at these locations (Mississippi Nights). Mississippi Nights and Pop’s host some major artists, but are better known for up and coming artists and independent artists. The Savvis Center is used for many large mainstream artists concerts, from Maroon 5 to Rascal Flatts (Savvis Center).
