Coast Guard Tuition Assistance Summary

Don't forget to submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  The application opens each year on October 1st for the next Fall.  Please visit Student Financial Aid website for calculators to help determing the cost of attendance.

Eligibility

Tuition Assistance is available to all active duty and drilling Coast Guard Reserve members, along with funded civilian employees and Public Health Service members working for the Coast Guard. Enlisted members must complete their TA-funded course before reaching the end of their enlistment or reenlist before starting a Coast Guard TA-funded course. Coast Guard Reserve officers incur a 48-month obligation when using tuition assistance.

Covered Costs

1. Tuition costs not to exceed:
   1. $250 per semester credit hour
   2. $166.66 per quarter credit hour
   3. $16.67 per clock hour
   4. $2,250 per fiscal year

Application Process- Coast Guard servicemembers must go through their station or base Education Service Officer (ESO)

1. Consulting with an ESO to locate courses or programs.
2. Verifying the institution's accreditation
3. Verifying that service obligation time-lines are met, or the servicemember must reenlist
4. Completing CG Form 4187 Coast Guard TA application
5. Reading and signing the Statement of Understanding
6. Having an ESO verify CG Form 4187 and signit
7. Retaining a copy of CG Form 4187 for personal records
8. Submitting a grade report upon course or program completion
9. Once TA funding is approved, the servicemember will get back a CG Form 1560 which is needed by the school when registering for TA-funded classes. If a servicemember is using multiple sources of financial aid funding, TA funding will be calculated on the remaining amount after the other financial aid sources have paid.

Campus Requirements/Steps

1. Receive acceptance for TA use as described above.
2. Submit Tuition Assistance Authorization form to the Bursar’s Office (located in Rendleman Hall) prior to start of course. 
3. Authorization amount will be entered on student account as memo amount. 
4. Billing will be processed after four week class drop period. 
5. Payment will appear on student account when paid by unit.
