Four easy steps for a successful freshman year
Transitioning from high school to college can be intimidating. You are coming from something that is so familiar to you. You are leaving your friends, and you are alone to fend for yourself. Great news...everyone else is experiencing the same thing.
Now, how do you transition between high school and college? I am glad you asked. Here are a few tips that will open doors that you did not know even existed, and help you start your successful journey.
Don’t freak out about moving away from home
Moving away from home can be scary. You are in a new location and don’t know anyone. Open up, and introduce yourself to each other. You might find that you have something in common, and SIUE could become your second home.
Get involved to meet your peers
Get involved. Get involved. Get involved. I can’t say it enough. Getting involved on campus will open doors to new friends and connections you would not have gained otherwise. There are more than 250 student organizations at SIUE. Get out of your comfort zone and join one, two or ten. You won’t regret it.
Time management
I know. You’ve heard this before. However, time management is one of the most important skills to have. As a freshman, you are meeting new friends and wanting to hang out with them as much as you can. It's ok. We all did it. Balancing your time can be difficult. But with a calendar, you know when to have a good time with friends and when to hit the books.
Utilize your resources on campus
SIUE has many resources to help students be successful. Utilize them even when you don’t think you need help. Visit the Academic Advancement Center. Your professors are also great resources. They can help you understand material and also help later as you grow in your program. At SIUE, there is always someone to help.
Now that you have these helpful tips...get out there, explore campus and connect with one another. Step outside of your comfort zone, and use your time wisely.
