Cleaning Inspections Begin This Week!

Cleaning and Safety Inspections will occur September 24 – September 28 and October 1 – 5, 2018. 

Below is the time and date of your wing’s inspection. Please note that if you are not home during your allotted time, both an RA and a Professional Staff member (Community Director or Assistant Community Director) will key into your living unit to do the inspection. There will be a note waiting for you upon your return stating whether or not you passed your inspection. If you have failed the inspection, there will be a reason and you will be responsible for rectifying the situation within 48 hours. Your RA will be doing a follow-up with each of you. Please read the schedule below to learn more about when your wing will be inspected:

The following is a list of things that will be examined during inspection and what you should do to prepare. Please see your Living Guide, page 31, 37, & 38, for more clarification.

Bathroom:

  • Clean the shower, tiles inside and outside the shower, and the shower curtain
  • Clean the toilet inside and out, the bottom of the basin, and around the floor
  • Clean the sink and counter, medicine cabinet, and all mirrors
  • Empty the trash and mop the floor

Bedroom/Living Unit:

  • Empty trash and clean floors
  • Keep the bedroom and living area neat and orderly

Living Room:

  • Dust all furniture and mop all floors including the hallway
  • Sweep rugs/carpet
  • Clean walls with a non-abrasive cleanser and a soft towel

Kitchen:

  • Clean entire stove inside and out, top burners, broiler, over, and fan filter
  • Do NOT place aluminum foil under drip pans or on the bottom of the stove as this is a serious fire hazard!
  • Pull out stove, refrigerator, and moveable counter and thoroughly clean behind and under them
  • Wash all dishes and take out all trash
  • Clean off all counter tops
  • Clean floors, cabinets, walls, and other surfaces

General Housekeeping:

  • All trash should be removed from the living unit, balcony or patio, and from around the living unit, including under the stairwell and in the breezeway
  • Trash must be taken to the trash rooms or to a dumpster
  • Electrical outlets are fire hazards if left overloaded
  • Extension cords or speaker wires should not be placed across traffic areas or under rugs
  • There should be no decorations hanging from the ceiling, such as nets or paper
  • Dressers, desk, and bed ends (except to bunk beds) may not be stacked in any way due to safety considerations
  • Residents are responsible for items in the storage closets

Join RHA October 4 at 6pm in EH 284 for the annual Housing Budget review.

Keep Your Air Vents Clear!

Please make sure you are keeping furniture and other items away from air vents in your living unit.  Clear air vents will help prevent issues with the HVAC systems and your apartments at a comfortable climate.

Report Facilities Issues Timely

University Housing Facilities Management (UHFM) is the unit assigned to the development and maintenance of University Housing facilities and grounds. UHFM hours are 7:00AM-3:30PM Monday-Friday and as needed they do address emergencies in evenings and on weekends. 

In the event of any University Housing building or grounds related issues please report it right away.  To report it Students need to initiate the repair by submitting a Maintenance Request to University Housing Facilities Management (UHFM). UHFM responds to student initiated repair requests as a first priority.  For many issues the Student does not need to be present for UHFM to address the issue, so do not delay in reporting thinking you must be present when they come.  To complete a work order, click HERE!!!

Pest Issues?

When a request to University Housing Facilities Management is received regarding insects, they create a work order however it will not be handled that day.  It is added to the Pest Control log for them to visit that location during their next weekly on-campus inspection which takes place Wednesday mornings.

University Housing does not insure the personal property of residents. Residents are strongly encouraged to insure their personal belongings while living in University Housing. Students can look into renter’s insurance or their parent/guardian homeowners’ policy for potential coverage options.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville has implemented the Illinois law that prohibits smoking and all tobacco related products into its policies and procedures. To view SIUE’s Smoke Free Campus Policy, click here.

Having TV issues?  Read Me!

Charter Business has transitioned its analog video TV service to high-quality digital TV service, which provides more channels and increased HD content. As part of this transition, only TVs with a digital QAM tuner will be able to view the new digital lineup. If a TV does not have an embedded QAM tuner or is enabled with an external QAM tuner, an error message or snowy picture will appear on the TV.

What is a QAM tuner and how do I know if my TV has one? A QAM tuner allows your TV to tune to the digital or HD cable channels that Charter will be sending out. Most, but not all, TVs that were made after 2006 have a QAM tuner built in. Most Samsung, Sony, Sharp, Panasonic, Toshiba, and Visio models have a built in QAM tuner. Brands like Westinghouse, Colby, Element, or other lower end brands often do not have the QAM tuner. These are only a few examples. Please be sure to check for a QAM tuner when considering a specific TV model.

• You can search online by make/model of your TV or reference your TV's owner’s manual for specific model information related to what type of tuner is present.

• An example of what the manual may say if the TV has a QAM tuner: o “Built-in digital tuner (ATSC/Clear QAM)”

NOTE: An ATSC tuner will not work with Clear QAM. It MUST say “Clear QAM” or “Digital QAM Tuner”.

 • Additionally, if your TV remote has the (.) or (-) symbol button for easy tuning or is able to display channels with a (.) or (-) as in 5.2 or 5-2, your device likely has a QAM tuner.

NOTE: This is general information regarding integrated QAM tuner enabled TVs. It is always advised to refer to the manufacturer’s website or examine the “technical specifications” section of the owner’s manual to determine information on the QAM tuner.

How do I program my TV to view the new channel lineup?

• Most QAM tuner TVs have a "Channel Search" or "Auto Program" function that will automatically scan the incoming signals and detect the ones that are available. It may be necessary to do a channel search before your TV will allow you to tune to a specific channel.

1. Go into the TV Menu and select “Set Up”

2. Look for and select an option similar to “Channel Search” or “Auto Program”

3. The TV will automatically begin searching to identify all available channels

4. After this auto search is completed, there should be approximately 60-70 channels available for viewing (if the TV has an internal QAM tuner). If no channels are available, it is likely the TV does not have a QAM tuner.

NOTE: If you previously watched a program on channel 4, the new channel may have moved to a new number, such as 4.2 or 4-2. Please speak to your property manager about new channel lineup cards.

NOTE: Most HD TVs have the ability to modify aspect ratios. If your picture seems stretched or has black bars around the picture after the scan, please modify the aspect ratio to fit with your desired viewing experience.

When do I need to reprogram my TV to view the new channel lineup?

• The Clear QAM solution has been installed on-campus. If you have not already, you should plan to program your TV immediately. Until the TV is rescanned, your new digital TV lineup will not be viewable.

• Tivo is not compatible with the QAM solutions

Safe Zone

all 2018 Safe Zone Ally Training

Safe Zone will be offering Ally Training for students on Friday, October 19th from 1:30PM-3:30PM in the Multifunction Room in Woodland Hall. The goal of training is to provide attendees skills and understanding for supporting the LGBTQIA community.  Each student must pre-register to attend this training.  Space is limited.

What is Safe Zone?

Safe Zone is a community of people who:

  • Will be understanding, supportive, and trustworthy if LGBTQIA people need help, advice, or just someone to talk to.
  • Will not tolerate homophobic, heterosexist, cisgenderism comments and actions but will address them in an educational and informative manner.
  • Have attended Safe Zone training and have information on campus and community resources.

Mission and Goals of Safe Zone:

Safe Zone's mission at SIUE is to develop a campus community of allies and provide support to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, and ally (LGBTQIA) students, faculty, and staff with the ultimate goal of developing SIUE as a safe and welcoming place for LGBTQIA people.

Volunteers Needed for Career Fairs

The Career Development Center has great volunteer opportunity for students to help at the career fair.  This gives students a chance to network with employers before and after the career fair. Students get a chance to make that first impression or leave that lasting impression with employers.  Students will be helping employers with a variety of tasks like helping employers in from the parking lot, walking employers to their career fair table, showing them where everything in located, and helping them pack everything up at the end of the career fair.  Students may also help at the registration tables for employers and/or students.
