Meet Yemisi Ola-Afolayan, MA in Art Therapy Counseling

Yemisi Ola-Afolayan's higher education journey started with her bachelor's degree in fine arts in Nigeria. With time, she had the privilege of instructing an art therapy session which revealed that there is no denying the potentials inherent in art therapy in an environment like Nigeria, where mental health and wellbeing are often ignored. This led her to pursue a master's degree in Art Therapy Counseling.

Yemisi has been the recipient of the Graduate Scholar Award. She was also once featured as a guest speaker at an undergraduate class, to share her experience with art education in Nigeria and in the culture.

Post-graduation, Yemisi intends to work as a Certified Art Therapist Counsellor to enhance her experience. She hopes to combine this with the knowledge and problem-solving skills acquired during the program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville to offer help to the mentally ill and foster healthy communities for these individuals to thrive in Nigeria.
