SIUE’s Academic and Research Misconduct Policy

The Graduate School Office of Research & Projects did a series last month highlighting SIUE’s Academic and Research Misconduct Policy 1Q5, as well as resources available to help promote a culture of research integrity at all levels within the academic community. The articles focused on the definition of research and academic misconduct, how to make a research or academic misconduct allegation, the steps of the research misconduct process, and repercussions of research misconduct. Check out all of the articles here.

The articles have links to helpful resources SIUE publishes including the Research and Academic Misconduct Policy (1Q5) and its research integrity webpage. The Research Integrity webpage has definitions of academic and research misconduct, contact information for the SIU Ethics office, and information on who you can talk to about making an allegation. The Responsible Conduct of Research page has interactive case studies and videos for students to encourage ethical research practices. There are also links to outside resources like the National Institutes of Health (NIH) webpage on “What is Research Integrity,” NIH guidance on common questions like “what are the requirements for making a finding of research misconduct?,” and the book Fostering Integrity in Research.

Meet Paige Dickey, Doctorate of Nursing Practice student

Paige Dickey, current student in the DNP-Nurse Anesthesia program, is living out her dream of becoming an independent healthcare provider.  After completing her bachelor's degree in nursing in 2014 from Southeast Missouri State University, she worked for five years as an ICU nurse at St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield, Missouri.  She chose SIUE to pursue her DNP in nurse anesthesia because of the many opportunities that were available to her in the program.

One of those opportunities has been to serve as a GA for a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant, which Paige says has enhanced her education in countless ways.  She commented that "Having the opportunity to learn and grow from such a great group of educators and researchers has not only better prepared me for my doctoral studies, but has given me the tools to become a better provider in the future." As Paige prepares for her future, she intends to support the health care needs of rural communities with a commitment to lifelong learning through staying current on evidence-based practices to provide the best possible care for her patients.
