Spring Semester Groups Forming in Counseling Services

Spring Semester Groups for students interested in a group therapy experience are currently forming.

The groups offered this semester are:

Understanding Myself and Others
2:30-4 p.m.
Tuesdays or Fridays 
Gain support and learn more about yourself by giving and receiving interpersonal feedback from a variety of group members and leaders.

ACT Mindfully
1-2:30 p.m.
Wednesdays 
Focus on improving overall wellness by discussing and practicing coping skills, mindfulness, self-care and distress tolerance skills.

9-10:30 a.m.
Thursdays
This is a counseling group for students identifying as African American and/or black. The focus will be on community building, family of origin concerns, racial identity development, trauma, resilience, academic and career development, and navigating the intersections of multiple marginalized identities.

Powerful Minds
2:30-4 p.m.
Thursdays 
Learn and apply cognitive-behavioral techniques that can help in managing stress, anxiety and depression. Identify and decrease unhelpful thought patterns.

Survivors of Silence (Facilitated by a Call for Help Counselor)
11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Fridays
Empowering, confidential and free support for survivors of sexual violence.

Students can discuss the process of joining a group by calling Counseling Services at 618-650-2842. Students interested in Survivors of Silence are asked to contact Call for Help directly at 618-397-0975 to set up a brief screening appointment.

The SIUE Women's Studies program has scheduled the following events for January:

Women Liberation Movement: The gap between the Urban Woman and the Rural Woman. There are several movements springing up in a fight against women discrimination and violence. However, there is a huge gap between the liberation of the urban women and women in the rural areas.

In this presentation, IRIS Center technician Ben Ostermeier will discuss and demonstrate the Scalar content management system. Using Scalar, students and professors can publish their scholarship online in unique ways using digital media. Ostermeier will show how to use the content management system and discuss what types of websites Scalar is best suited for creating. No previous technical experience is necessary.

Coffee and pastries will be served.

SIUE Ice Hockey Club Second Annual Teddy Bear Toss Game, Jan. 25

The SIUE Ice Hockey Club is hosting its second annual Teddy Bear Toss when it takes on the University of Kentucky.

7:30 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 25
East Alton Ice Arena

Fans are encouraged to bring a teddy bear or other stuffed animal to throw on the ice after SIUE scores its first goal. If you are unable to get a teddy bear ahead of time, the SIUE Club Sports office will be selling small teddy bears for $15 in the arena lobby prior to the game.

Teddy bears can also be dropped off or purchased at the SIUE Programming Office in the Student Fitness Center by Wednesday, Jan. 22. All teddy bears will be donated to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. To download the Teddy Bear Toss registration form, click here.

General admission is $5. SIUE students are admitted free with valid ID.

Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion Wants Your Calendar Events

The Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion is in the process of developing a comprehensive calendar for the following cultural heritage and history months.

  • Women's History Month (March) - Deadline to submit events is  Friday, Jan. 31
  • National Diversity Month (April) - Deadline to submit events is Friday, Jan. 31

If your department will be hosting an event that aligns with either of these months, we welcome you to include your event on our marketing calendar.

SIUE Safe Zone Training Facilitators Needed

SIUE Safe Zone is seeking new facilitators for Safe Zone Training Sessions.
Please contact Nick Niemerg at nniemer@siue.edu with any questions about the application process and below requirements. 

Goals of Safe Zone Training

  • To develop
    • Listening and helping skills
    • Inclusive habits in the classroom, office and on larger scales
    • A common base of understanding with respect to the LGBTQIA+ community
  • To provide information regarding
    • Terms regarding sexual orientation and gender identity
    • The complexity of sexuality and gender
    • Campus and community contacts

Safe Zone Training Facilitator Expectations

  • Facilitators must follow the training model created by the Safe Zone Committee.
  • If necessary, new facilitators will shadow current facilitators during scheduled training sessions. Shadowing is determined at the discretion of the Safe Zone Committee.
  • Once accepted, it is suggested that facilitators take part in facilitating at least one session per semester.
  • Each training session will have two facilitators. Each pair must meet prior to an assigned session to prepare to facilitate.

Facilitator Application Requirements

  • Applicant must have completed the SIUE Safe Zone Training prior to submitting a facilitator application.
  • Applicant must be either a graduate student or current employee of SIUE.
  • Applicant must submit a typed statement answering the following:
    • Experience with SIUE Safe Zone
      • When did you complete your Safe Zone training?
    • Why do you want to facilitate Safe Zone Training sessions?
    • What endeavors (previous/current, on/off campus) are you involved in regarding LGBTQIA+ advocacy and education?
    • What skill sets will you bring to the facilitator team?
    • Describe your knowledge base in respect to the goals of Safe Zone Training.
    • Describe your social identities as they relate to power/privilege and disadvantage.

Free Dental Screening, Feb. 17 and March 9

A FREE dental screening, including select x-rays, will be done for patients 18 years and older who are willing to participate in a Dental Board Licensing Examination.

If accepted as a Board Examination patient, there is no charge for the treatment you receive during the exam. This is for the Board Examination only, which is required for senior dental students. It does not mean you will become a clinic patient at SIU SDM.
