Nominate a Non-Traditional Student for their Exceptional Work

Next week is National Non-Traditional Student Week!

Non-Traditional Student Week is a national celebration held in the first week of November each year, sponsored by the Association for Nontraditional Students in Higher Education (ANTSHE). ANTSHE's mission is to provide scholarship opportunities, academic resources and motivational support for non-traditional students, and to celebrate and build on the network of faculty, administrators and advisors that work with and inspire non-traditional students to succeed.
Student Government will honor four non-traditional SIUE students at Student Senate meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4.  We are seeking nominations for exceptional students who, despite life’s obstacles, continue to prevail academically. In order to properly honor these students, we need nominations from those who work closely with students in an academic setting.

What is a Non-Traditional Student?
The Illinois Board of Higher Education defines a non-traditional student as an undergraduate student who is at least 24 years old and also meets at least one of the following criteria: is a parent, is employed full- or part-time, is married, or has delayed enrollment in higher education.

Categories
Esteemed Non-Traditional Student
This student serves as a role model for her/his peers by enhancing the atmosphere of the classroom or volunteering in service activities on or off campus.
Outstanding Non-Traditional Student
This student should be involved in leadership roles in the University or community.  She/he should demonstrate exemplary leadership by upholding the five values of SIUE: Citizenship, Excellence, Inclusion, Integrity and Wisdom.
Prestigious Non-Traditional Student
This student must excel academically and meet the challenges of academe with determination and enthusiasm while maintaining a 3.5+ cumulative GPA.
Resilient Non-Traditional Student
The student is currently facing or has overcome great obstacles in order to further her/his education.

How Do I Nominate a Student?
To nominate a student, please visit GetInvolved and complete the 2017 Non-Traditional Student Award Nomination form. You may submit nominations for more than one student; however, you may not nominate students that are related to you, nor may you nominate a student in more than one category. All nominations should be submitted no later than 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22.
Please contact Internal Affairs Officer Erin O'Flaherty at eoflahe@siue.edu or (618) 650-3818 with any questions.

Thanksgiving Food Drive for SIUE Students, Donate by Nov. 10

SIUE prides itself on giving, but how does it feel to know that some of our own students are struggling with food insecurity?

You have the opportunity to help our students.

The Sociology Club and Student Organization for Sustainability are working on SIUE's first Thanksgiving drive for students, which will result in a campus pantry for students in need.

As the holidays are quickly approaching and classes ending, hunger does not take a vacation for many SIUE students and their families.

The Thanksgiving Food Drive is seeking to provide those in need with a bag of groceries to help make a Thanksgiving meal.

Please consider donating one or more of the below food items:

Instant mashed potatoes
Rice
Canned green beans
Canned corn
Canned spinach
Canned greens
Cranberry sauce
Gravy (packet or jar)
Stuffing boxes
Canned meats
Monetary donation for fresh produce

Donation sites are located in the Morris University Center, Peck Hall, Founders Hall and Alumni Hall. No time to drop off? Please contact Jalela Mitchell at jalmitc@siue.edu to schedule a pick up, or Dr. Connie Frey Spurlock in Peck Hall, room 1213 or at cfrey@siue.edu

All food donations are needed by Friday, Nov. 10.

Please Donate to the 2017 Angel Tree, Deadline Nov. 17

There are more than 300 local children who are in need of gifts and clothes this holiday season. Any organization, student, faculty or staff can sponsor a child or multiple children this holiday season.

Important dates:
Now: Start of Angel sign up and pick up
Friday, Nov. 17: Deadline to sponsor a child and last day to pick-up Angels by 4 p.m.
Monday-Thursday, Nov. 27-Dec. 1: Drop off labeled presents to Student Government Office in SSC 1280

Children's Holiday Celebration and Gift Pick-up
9 a.m.-2 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 2
Morris University Center, Conference Center and Mississippi/Illinois Room

We encourage our student organizations to participate in the event on Dec. 2. The organization that accumulates the most "angel points" by adopting the most angels, donating wrapping paper, providing the most volunteers, and participating in our “ugly” Holiday sweater contest, will receive a $150 credit on their organization account!

There will be treats, games, crafts, pictures with Santa, and opportunities to interact with the children you are sponsoring.

For more information, contact External Affairs Officer, Ethan Massey, at emassey@siue.edu or stop by the Student Government Office.

Please Donate to East St. Louis Charter High School Angel Tree

The SIUE East St. Louis Charter High School (CHS) is kicking off its annual Angel Tree giving program. This is your opportunity to support part of our larger University community, and make this holiday season a memorable one for the students at CHS.

As winter approaches, the staff of CHS would like to ensure that all of our students experience the joy of the holiday season. To that end, we would like to invite you to participate in our Angel Tree giving program.

This year, it is our goal to give every CHS student a new sweatshirt and to give additional winter gear to the neediest students.

Giving is easy! Now through Friday, Dec. 8, we will be accepting donations to the Angel Tree giving program.

DONATE NOW to give online, using a credit card.

We also accept cash or checks. Checks should be made payable to SIUE Foundation and sent to:
Anne Moore

Employee Recognition Program

The Employee Recognition Program Award is an esteemed accolade bestowed on an employee who epitomizes the University’s core values in his/her daily work. These employees are engaged in accomplishing the mission of the university, upholding our University’s values and routinely exceed the call of duty.

Do you have someone in your department who has a strong commitment toward achieving excellence in their work? Why not nominate them for the Employee Recognition Program award?

The program is designed to recognize staff for their exceptional accomplishments and service to our University community. Nominations can be made by faculty, staff or students, but they must be supported by the immediate supervisor. Employees must be employed in their current position for two years and not have received the award within the last five years in order to be nominated for the award.

We encourage you all to nominate your outstanding staff members, so they can be recognized for their hard work and dedication. To complete the nomination form and see criteria for the nomination letter, visit the HR page at: http://www.siue.edu/humanresources/employment/employee_recognition_program.shtml

Completed nomination forms and letters should be sent to: Jen Oates-Blair at joatesb@siue.edu or campus box 1040.

Thank you in advance for your time and nominations!
