Enjoy Fall Photo Shoot Days at The Gardens at SIUE, Oct. 28-29

The Gardens at SIUE invites the community to its first fall photo shoot days:

11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 28-29

Families should come to the upper parking lot off Arboretum Lane. Hay bales, pumpkins and mums will be out on the nearby lawn as background for photos. Visitors can take their own photos or Gardens volunteers will take them for visitors.

Each family will be limited to 10-15 minutes when others are waiting. There will be no professional photographers available, and there will be no charge for the assistance of our master gardeners and master naturalist volunteers. This will be a good opportunity for special fall photos, including ones of children in Halloween costumes.

For more information, contact TheGardens@siue.edu.

SIUE Offers New Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing

SIUE is introducing a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing beginning fall 2018.

A terminal degree for poets and fiction writers, the MFA qualifies students for careers in academia and writing-related fields. Unlike most programs in the country, the MFA at SIUE includes a service-learning component that encourages experiential learning.

Joel Hardman, PhD, chair of the Department of English Language and Literature, is extremely enthusiastic about the new program. “We are excited to be offering a new program with faculty who are committed to mentoring the next generation of creative writers through service learning,” he said.

Prospective students may begin to apply now. Applications close Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018.

For more information, contact Professor Geoff Schmidt at geschmi@siue.edu

Thanksgiving Food Drive for SIUE Students, Donate by Nov. 7

SIUE prides itself on giving, but how does it feel to know that some of our own students are struggling with food insecurity?

Your department has the opportunity to help our students.

The Sociology Club and Student Organization for Sustainability are working on SIUE's first Thanksgiving drive for students, which will result in a campus pantry for students in need.

As the holidays approach and classes end, hunger does not take a vacation for many SIUE students and their families.

The Thanksgiving Food Drive is seeking to provide those in need with a bag of groceries to help make a thanksgiving meal.

Please consider donating one or more of the below food items:

Instant mashed potatoes
Rice
Canned green beans
Canned corn
Canned spinach
Canned greens
Cranberry sauce
Gravy (packet or jar)
Stuffing boxes
Canned meats
Monetary donation for fresh produce

Donation sites will be determined. In the meantime, please contact Jalela Mitchell at jalmitc@siue.edu or Dr. Connie Frey Spurlock in Peck Hall, room 1213 or cfrey@siue.edu

All food donations are needed by Friday, Nov. 10.
