SIUE Adjusts 2018 Spring Commencement

SIUE is adjusting its Spring 2018 Commencement schedule to accommodate growth at the event and create an even better experience for the graduates and their guests.

“We are making a serious effort to ensure that all of the graduates’ family members and guests are able to see their graduate receive their degree in person, and have the most enjoyable experience possible,” said SIUE Chancellor Randy Pembrook. “We had reached a state where our growth was forcing some to view their graduates via video from another location within the Vadalabene Center because the arena was at maximum capacity, and we decided that adjustments were necessary.”

For the first time, SIUE will present Friday ceremonies during the day. The School of Business will begin the schedule with a 10 a.m. exercise on Friday, May 4 in the Vadalabene Center (VC). The School of Nursing will follow in the afternoon at 2 p.m. by combining both its traditional pinning and commencement exercises into one ceremony. The first day will conclude with the Graduate School at 6:30 p.m.

The School of Education, Health and Human Behavior (SEHHB) will start Saturday, May 5, in the VC at 8:30 a.m. The first of two College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) ceremonies will begin at 12:30 p.m. The School of Pharmacy will combine its traditional hooding and graduation ceremonies at 2:30 p.m. in the Morris University Center’s Meridian Ballroom. The second CAS ceremony will combine with the School of Engineering for the final exercise in the VC at 5 p.m.

Strategic projections utilizing past attendance foresee VC attendance figures surpassing 75 percent capacity for each of the various ceremonies.

“Commencement is the culminating experience for our students and their families,” Pembrook said. “We want everyone to enjoy this experience as a special moment in time, and we think these changes will help ensure that outcome.”

Help Beat SIUC in 2017 EcoChallenge

The Student Organization for Sustainability is building a #SIUEGreenTeam as part of the Northwest Earth Institute's 2017 EcoChallenge.

SIUE is competing with SIUC to see which campus is the #GreenerSIU. Points are earned when team members check in daily at https://goo.gl/guiV25/ to update their progress.

The competition runs through Wednesday, Oct. 25.

Students, staff and faculty are welcome to join at any point during the EcoChallenge.

The EcoChallenge is a great way to develop new behaviors that benefit both the environment and one’s self. It's also a terrific way to connect with other changemakers in the community.

Go to EcoChallenge to sign up. When you're prompted to join a team, search for the #SIUEGreenTeam.

Bonnie Brueggemann is the Employee of the Month

Bonnie Brueggemann, benefits officer in the Office of Human Resources, is the recipient of the October Employee Recognition Award.

“SIUE holds a special place in my heart," said Brueggemann. "My mom has worked at the University since I was six years old, and my dad retired from here. I have been a student, a student worker, a graduate assistant and now a full-time employee. This campus feels like my second home."

“Bonnie’s work is excellent in all aspects," said Summer Murphy, Office of Human Resources benefits manager. "She has great customer service, is efficient with time, and continues to find ways to improve her skills. She will go above and beyond to help employees she serves, ensuring each one is treated the same regardless of the employee’s status or classification.”

"Working in Benefits has been a positive learning experience both professionally and personally," added Brueggemann.

First Thanksgiving Food Drive for SIUE Students, Donate by Nov. 7

SIUE prides itself on giving, but how does it feel to know that some of our own students are struggling with food insecurity?

Your department has the opportunity to help our students.

The Sociology Club and Student Organization for Sustainability are working on SIUE's first Thanksgiving drive for students, which will result in a campus pantry for students in need.

As the holidays approach and classes end, hunger does not take a vacation for many SIUE students and their families.

The Thanksgiving Food Drive is seeking to provide those in need with a bag of groceries to help make a thanksgiving meal.

Please consider donating one or more of the below food items:

Instant mashed potatoes
Rice
Canned green beans
Canned corn
Canned spinach
Canned greens
Cranberry sauce
Gravy (packet or jar)
Stuffing boxes
Canned meats
Monetary donation for fresh produce

Donation sites will be determined. In the meantime, please contact Jalela Mitchell at jalmitc@siue.edu or Dr. Connie Frey Spurlock in Peck Hall, room 1213 or cfrey@siue.edu

All food donations are needed by Friday, Nov. 10.
