Suicide Awareness and Prevention Faculty Development Training, Oct. 12

Suicide Awareness and Prevention Faculty Development Training
9:30-10:45 a.m.
Thursday, Oct. 12
Morris University Center, Mississippi-Illinois Room

Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among college students. One in 10 college students has made a plan for suicide. As a faculty member, you play a vital role not only in providing our students with an exceptional education, but also in serving as an invaluable role model and mentor.

Navigating college life can be challenging and stressful. For some students, the demands can lead to feelings of anxiety and depression. This can have a profound impact on class performance and social development.

As a professor, you may take note of this impact, both inside and outside of the classroom. However, many do not feel equipped or knowledgeable in how to help a struggling student.

In this important faculty development session, participants will walk through several high risk scenarios involving students in emotional distress and exhibiting suicidal thinking. This training will help you to feel more comfortable and confident in your ability to respond to these difficult situations, and will provide you with the needed resources to help our students at SIUE to be well.

This training is a part of our iCARE suicide prevention initiative at SIUE and will be led by Counseling Services, expert faculty and student advocates. No prior knowledge of mental health disorders is needed for this training, and ALL faculty are encouraged to attend.

Presenters:
Kelly Gable, PharmD, BCPP
Chris Herndon, PharmD, BCPS,
Rebecca Luebbert, PhD, RN, PMHCNS-BC
Jessica Ulrich, MSW, LCSW
Lisa Thompson-Gibson, MA, LPC

Sponsored by: Initiative to Create Awareness, Recognition, and Education (iCARE)

Please register.

Encourage Students to Apply for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Award

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Award recognizes SIUE undergraduate students who exemplify Dr. King's teachings, principles and philosophical beliefs.

The Selection Committee seeks to recognize outstanding accomplishments in the areas of academic achievement, leadership, and service. It is in the spirit of Dr. King's rich heritage and legacy that Southern Illinois University Edwardsville proudly offers the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Award on an annual basis to deserving students.

The recipient of the Scholarship Award normally will receive an award of tuition for one academic semester of full-time study at SIUE. If the recipient’s tuition is covered by other financial aid, the amount equal to the tuition will be applied to fees, housing or other University issued educational expenses.

In the event that a recipient is entering graduate study at SIUE the term following the award, the award may be used for such a purpose. The Scholarship Award may only be used for SIUE educational expenses during the 2018-19 academic year.

All interested students are encouraged to apply for this scholarship, which will be awarded based on a consideration of the following criteria:

1. Be an SIUE undergraduate student who has demonstrated the characteristics and ideals of Dr. King
2. Be enrolled for full-time study at SIUE
3. Have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
4. Have completed at least one academic term as a full-time undergraduate student at SIUE prior to the application deadline

The application must be completed and requested documents uploaded to getinvolved.siue.edu/submitter/form/ by Friday, Oct. 13. Please share this information with students.

For more information, contact Vicky Dean at (618) 650-5296 or vdean@siue.edu.
