Welcome Students! Fall Semester Begins

Today marks the start of the fall semester!

Volunteers will be standing at key locations on campus through noon today, holding “Ask Me!” signs. These volunteers are available to answer questions and get students pointed in the right direction for their classes or to conduct business.

Also, as part of the annual welcome back to school event for students, the Office of Student Affairs will provide free lemonade on the Stratton Quadrangle from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. today.

Get Your Eclipse Eyewear on Campus for Today's Total Eclipse

You are invited to view today's eclipse on the SIUE campus.

The solar event will begin at 11:50 a.m. and end at 2:44 p.m., with 99.5 percent totality occurring at 1:18 p.m.

Solar eclipse glasses will be handed out on campus from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. today at the following sites:

  • Between the Art & Design and School of Engineering buildings
  • Between Peck and Founders Halls
  • At the Cougar statue outside the Morris University Center
  • Builders Plaza between Peck and Rendelman Halls
  • Morris University Center patio on the east side of the building
  • Korte Stadium, the public viewing site

Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to experience this scientific phenomenon during your mid-day break or by arranging a convenient time with your manager or supervisor.

For the University community, telescope viewing locations will be at the Builders of the University Plaza, Ralph Korte Stadium and the Morris University Center patio, where a solar telescope will also be available. A live stream from the MUC telescope will be shown in the MUC Meridian Ballroom.

Eclipse viewing glasses will be distributed free of charge at each campus location.

Each campus viewing location will display an enlarged, live video of the eclipse from the telescope. Professors from the SIUE Department of Physics will be on hand at each location, providing solar eclipse science and safety information.

The general public will be able to utilize the Korte Stadium location where an enlarged, live video of the eclipse from a solar telescope will be displayed on multiple large screens. The viewing tent will be on the north side of the stadium adjacent to the parking lot. The Morris University Center food truck will be available for food and refreshments.

For more information, visit siue.edu/eclipse.

Remember: Observing a solar eclipse is a remarkable experience when done safely. Never look at the sun without special eclipse eyewear. Standard sunglasses are not enough.

Help Welcome New International Students to Campus

Please welcome more than 100 new international students to SIUE.

Students come to SIUE from Spain, China, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, El Salvador, Rwanda and Nigeria, to name a few countries.

This group includes four new Fulbright students, 16 exchange students and one Fulbright Teaching Assistant, who will teach Yoruba.

In addition to students, SIUE welcomes 20 visiting scholars, from China, Italy, Brazil and S. Korea. Ten of the Scholars from China will participate in the International Training Program on Pedagogy during fall semester.

Over the next few days, students and scholars will be involved in orientation activities. If you see international students or scholars on campus who need assistance, your help would be appreciated!

Feel free to direct any student or scholar needing help to the Office of International Affairs, located in the Student Success Center, room 0300, or available by phone at 650.3785.

Please Note these Guidelines for Classroom Use

With the Fall 2017 semester now underway, we would like to warmly welcome everyone to campus and share a few general classroom policy reminders aimed to assist us in providing the best possible student learning experience.

The Big 5 Guidelines for Use of General Classrooms:

1. Food and drinks are not allowed in general classrooms.

2. Do not move furniture in or out of classrooms. Manipulating the number of desks in the general classrooms can cause disruptions for colleagues who teach in the same spaces later in the day or week and may violate safety codes. Academic Scheduling conducts classroom inventory at the conclusion of each term and restores classrooms to their approved configurations. At that time, seating deficiencies are also addressed. If you newly discover missing seats or broken items please contact Adrienne Sims at extension 5593 or Joan Green at extension 3087, or email academicscheduling@siue.edu.

3. If you rearrange classroom furniture during the course of a class or event, please return the desks/seating to the original configuration by your scheduled end time. It is of particular importance that ADA seating is returned to the precise location where it began.

4. Do not occupy a room that has not been scheduled for your class or group or switch to an alternate room from the one assigned unless it has been approved by Academic Scheduling. If your assigned classroom is not meeting instructional needs, please contact academicscheduling@siue.edu, and we will determine how best to address your specific needs.

5. Do not occupy classrooms any longer than the approved, scheduled end time for your class or event. If you’ve scheduled a general classroom for a non-academic event, bring a copy of your reservation confirmation from Academic Scheduling as proof of scheduling.

If you have any problems with your classroom, please contact Academic Scheduling. We will do our best to address any issues that you may be having. Additionally, if there are items that you would like to have in the general classrooms to improve the functionality of the space, please let us know by using the Classroom Items Request form on the Registrar’s website.

Although we cannot guarantee that every request will be granted, we remain committed to exploring ways of improving classroom accommodations. For additional academic scheduling resources, please visit: siue.edu/registrar/scheduling_forms.shtml.
