Maas Named Director of SIUE ERTC

The SIUE School of Engineering has appointed Matthew Maas as director of the Environmental Resource Training Center (ERTC). Maas assumed his new duties on Tuesday, Aug. 1.

“Matt’s experience in the water industry from technical know-how to planning and managing large scale operations will be an asset for the ERTC,” said Cem Karacal, PhD, dean of the SIUE School of Engineering.  “We are counting on his leadership and motivational skills to propel the ERTC as a well-recognized center not only regionally, but also nationally.”

Maas arrives on the SIUE campus after serving as operations manager for California American Water in Sacramento, Calif., since 2015. He grew his career with more than a decade of service to Missouri American Water. He began as a lab technician in St. Louis in 2004, served as a water quality supervisor for Joplin and St. Louis from 2005-08, and became a water quality specialist in St. Louis from 2009-15.

“As an employee with Missouri American Water, I was always extremely impressed with the new hires that trained through the ERTC,” Maas said. “The success of the program and the opportunity to play an integral role in the training of future water and waste water operators made the position highly attractive. The unique assets and knowledgeable staff create an excellent opportunity for growth and collaboration with parties both inside and outside of the University.”

Maas earned a bachelor’s in biology from Coastal Carolina University in 2001.

On Monday, Aug. 7 from 7:30–10:30 a.m. at the Science West Building, the SIUE Police Department, Edwardsville Fire Department, Madison County Hazmat Team and many more agencies will participate in a hazardous materials training exercise.

The exercise will provide local emergency responders with training and specialty knowledge of Science West, which would enhance response capabilities for future incidents.

An e-lert will be sent Monday, Aug. 7 at 7:25 a.m. to remind everyone of the Hazmat training exercise. Part of Lot E will be blocked off for training purposes on Monday.

SIUE First Day of Classes Line Up with Solar Eclipse Events

SIUE’s first day of classes and the total solar eclipse coincide on Monday, Aug. 21. Classes will be held as scheduled. The solar event will begin at 11:50 a.m. and end at 2:44 p.m., with 99.5 percent totality occurring at 1:18 p.m.

Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to experience this scientific phenomenon during your mid-day break or by arranging a convenient time with your manager or supervisor.

For the University community, telescope viewing locations will be at the Builders of the University Plaza, Ralph Korte Stadium and the Morris University Center patio, where a solar telescope will also be available. A live stream from the MUC telescope will be shown in the MUC Meridian Ballroom.

Eclipse viewing glasses will be distributed free of charge at each campus location. The Office of Student Affairs will provide free lemonade on the Stratton Quadrangle from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. as part of the annual welcome back to school event for students.

Each campus viewing location will display an enlarged, live video of the eclipse from the telescope. Professors from the SIUE Department of Physics will be on hand at each location, providing solar eclipse science and safety information.

The general public will be able to utilize the Korte Stadium location where an enlarged, live video of the eclipse from a solar telescope will be displayed on multiple large screens. The viewing tent will be on the north side of the stadium adjacent to the parking lot. The Morris University Center food truck will be available for food and refreshments.

For more information, visit siue.edu/eclipse.

Remember: Observing a solar eclipse is a remarkable experience when done safely. Never look at the sun without special eclipse eyewear. Standard sunglasses are not enough.
