Alzheimer's Disease Seminar, July 28

Educational Outreach and the Department of Social Work will present:

"Alzheimer’s Disease: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow"

This event will give six CEU’s to participants.

Workshop participants will: 

  • Gain foundational knowledge of challenges and struggles dementia caregivers face
  • Learn ways of engaging families affected by dementia in rural areas
  • Observe specific tools and practices of creating community awareness and support for families affected by dementia
  • Receive an overview of normal aging and dementia, versus Alzheimer’s disease
  • Understand and develop strategies for responding to family issues, needs and involvement
  • Learn past and current medications used to treat Alzheimer’s disease
  • Learn whether some medications used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease are more effective at various stages of the illness
  • Learn information about the Knight ADCR (Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center) Memory and Aging Project
  • Learn information regarding clinical findings since the beginning of the program.

Eligibility Documentation Required:

1. Current Illinois driver’s license or Illinois picture I.D. of head of household; must be a resident of St. Clair County.

2. Social security cards for all household members (NO EXCEPTIONS)

3. Current medical card (Medicaid or Medicare), if applicable.

4. Proof of (90) DAY INCOME from (ALL SOURCES) prior to application date for ALL family members in the household.

5. Any family member in the household age 18 and older WITH NO INCOME must provide:
• Proof applied for financial assistance (e.g. child support, SSA, SSI, TANF, GA etc.); or
• If UNEMPLOYED, provide an Illinois Job Link from the Illinois Department of Employment Security
(with current activity for job searches) or current school schedule

6. If receiving UNEMPLOYMENT, provide proof of PAYMENT DETAIL SHEET from the Illinois Department of Security office from start to current date

7. Proof of RESIDENCY: Current lease and occupancy permit

The Land of Goshen Community Farmer’s Market is held in downtown Edwardsville Saturday mornings through October 21. At the market, businesses and farmers gather in tents—rain or shine—to sell their locally made products.
 
This year, the City of Edwardsville has again graciously offered the University booth space. Each week, a different department will host the SIUE tent to provide information on events, issues or offerings.

Volunteers Needed for Move-In Day, Register by Aug. 4

University Housing needs faculty and full-time staff volunteers to assist with Move-In Day for first-year students on Thursday, Aug. 17.

Volunteers help welcome first-year students and their families to SIUE and direct traffic at each of the three first-year residence halls (Bluff, Prairie and Woodland).

If you would like to volunteer for this amazing process, show your SIUE pride and have fun while doing it, email Rex Jackson at rjackso@siue.edu by Friday, Aug. 4.

Watch for these Kindermusik Classes this Fall

Register for these Kindermusik Fall Classes by Friday, Aug. 25. 

Kindermusik is a music and movement program with curriculum for children ages birth through seven. More specifically, Kindermusik classes provide a holistic musical and learning experience in the critical first years of young children and their families. This developmental program, guided by a proven methodology combining music and childhood development, provides opportunities to foster child-parent relationships and gain a lifelong love of music and learning. This program is great preparation for future Suzuki students as well! It is taught by a trained and licensed Kindermusik educator. The SIUE Suzuki Program presents “Kindermusik with Ellen Singh.”


"VILLAGE” class for children ages birth-1.5

Pick up your baby and dance! Dance the Charleston, the Tango and the Cha-Cha and learn why dancing with your baby helps develop vital learning skills—from head-to-toe. In this class, you will play a variety of baby appropriate instruments and dance with fun props.

Tuition of $135 due by registration deadline.

“OUR TIME Class” for children ages 1.5-3
Semester Theme: Wiggles and Giggles
10 a.m. Saturdays, Sept. 9, 16, 23 and 30 and Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28 and Nov. 4 and 11
11 a.m. Thursdays Sept. 7, 14, 21 and 28 and Oct. 5, 12, 19 and 26 and Nov. 2 and 9

This class encourages children to be creative, to initiate their own ideas and to respond in their own ways, while parents active participation gives the toddlers the security they need. Playing instruments, singing, moving and exploring uncover an engaging musical world, while building the toddlers’ confidence, self-control and communications skills. The more than 30 songs, 15 dances and eight different instruments create these unique music activities, designed to reflect the importance of movement and the “wiggles and giggles” in the life of your toddler.

Tuition of $160 is due by the registration deadline.
