Register by Today for Sustainability Workshop at Harris-Stowe State University

Mississippi Project VII: Infusing Sustainability Across the Curriculum
9 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
Friday, June 2
Harris-Stowe State University

This abbreviated workshop will explore how educators can meaningfully integrate sustainability into their classrooms. We start by taking a close look at the St. Louis region, but encourage participants to engage in local/global comparisons.

Participants will receive information on resources available that will help facilitate their own efforts to infuse sustainability into their curriculum. Participants will also have opportunities to extend research and teaching horizons across disciplines and create new networks with colleagues from around the region.

To register, please email Connie Frey Spurlock, cfrey@siue.edu. The deadline to register is today.

SIUE is one of 13 regional AASHE Centers for Sustainability Across the Curriculum.

Danielle Lee Named National Geographic Emerging Explorer

SIUE’s Danielle Lee, PhD, a visiting assistant professor in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Biological Sciences, has been tabbed among 14 “world-changers” by the National Geographic Society.

She has been named to its 2017 class of Emerging Explorers comprised of “uniquely gifted and inspiring scientists, conservationists, storytellers and innovators who are changing the world.”

“I was in complete shock upon hearing of this incredible acknowledgement,” said Lee. “This means the opportunity to talk about my research on a grander scale. It boosts the credibility of my science activism and offers an international platform to demonstrate the importance of natural history in the sciences.”

Read more about Lee’s research in this SIUE news story.

Register now for SIUE's Odyssey Cosmic Investigators.

9 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Monday-Friday, July 17-28

In the Cosmic Investigators Odyssey Camp, students begin their journey of learning to navigate by preparing a star shapes and stories log book. Of course they will need to know the different types of telescopes, how they work, and build one to take home. Participants will explore our solar system, making moon craters, solar viewing, investigating edible rocks (meteors), conducting planet temperature experiments and building a pocket solar system. Along the way, students will participate in the Viking search for life experiments and look for life in the universe.

Campers and their families are invited to a star party with the River Bend Astronomy Club on the evening of Saturday, July 22 at the Shaw Sky Lab on SIUE's campus.

Registration costs for Odyssey Science Camps are $325, plus a $25 non-refundable application fee. Registration information is available at siue.edu/summer/camps.
