“I am honored to be the recipient of the Employee of the Month Award. I would like to thank Steve Brandenburg for his nomination, as well as Kert MacLaughlin and Robert Legate for their nomination support. I truly work with an outstanding crew of people. Whether it is battling snow during the bitter cold in the wee hours of the morning or grooming the grounds in all kinds of weather, the crew gives their all for the benefit of the University. SIUE is a not only a beautiful place to work, but it is also a beautiful place for the students and the faculty. I am truly humbled and honored. Thank you very much.” -Steve Varady

“Steve is a great role model for our grounds employees, sharing positive stories of past issues and helping improve moral when issues arise. The people on the ground crew look to Steve for advice on everything from how to operate equipment to how to deal with some personal issues, and he is always ready to help with other grounds work when we have tight deadlines completing projects.” -Peter MacLaughlin, assistant superintendent of Grounds

Participants will also have opportunities to extend research and teaching horizons across disciplines and create new networks with colleagues from around the region.

To register, please email Connie Frey Spurlock, cfrey@siue.edu. The deadline to register is Wednesday, May 31.

SIUE is one of 13 regional AASHE Centers for Sustainability Across the Curriculum.

Download SIUE's Sustainability App Today

Three SIUE alumni from the Computer Science program have developed a new sustainability app.

Erin Balding, Jordin Ray and Stephen Russell created the application under the direction of Dr. Gary Mayer, associate professor in the Department of Computer Science.

The Sustainable SIUE app currently highlights 20 sustainability points of interest, with more being added weekly. Each point of interest is mapped and has a learning module attached. Faculty can also take advantage of the Scavenger Hunt option that allows for student teams and check-ins that can be monitored from your device.

The app is available only to android users. Download it now.

Contact Dr. Connie Frey Spurlock with any questions or comments at cfrey@siue.edu.
