Donate Your Gently-Used Books to Benefit Children

Donate your gently-used books for children who are between 6 months-old and 6 years-old.

To donate you can either:
  • Send books via campus mail to Steve Hupp, Box 1121
  • Drop them in the red tub across from the Department of Psychology in the basement of Alumni Hall
  • Email Steve to come pick them up, at sthupp@siue.edu

We’d love to have as many as possible by May 5, but we will continue to accept them all year!

Most of the books will be sent home with children attending the SIUE Head Start program. These kids LOVE books!

The books will come with a letter to parents that emphasizes:

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends daily reading starting at birth
  • Incorporating reading into the bedtime routine is a good way to make sure that reading happens every day
  • Several research-based tips for making daily reading more effective.
Thank you to all of the SIUE Head Start teachers and staff who make such a difference in these kids’ lives every day.

Thank you to everyone who has donated any of 10,000 books we’ve collected in the past few years!

Historic Scale Model of Campus Plan on Display in Lovejoy Library

The original scale model of the SIUE campus is available for viewing on the first floor of Lovejoy Library through the spring commencement ceremonies being held Friday and Saturday, May 5-6. The model features the intended design and appearance of the Edwardsville core campus, and was on exhibit during the campus groundbreaking in 1963.

The display coincides with the upcoming presentation of an SIUE Distinguished Service Award to Gyo Obata, the external architect of SIUE, during the Spring 2017 commencement ceremonies.

University Archivist Steve Kerber, and Library and Information Services Reference and Instruction Specialist Tiffany Dvorak, have organized the display that also includes support materials detailing the architectural history of SIUE.

“The model is amazingly true to the eventual construction of the campus,” Kerber said. “It shows the original buildings in counter-clockwise order, the manner in which they were built. It emphasizes the unique and amazing accomplishment that was the creation of SIUE.”

“Because we get so much foot traffic in the center of the Library, this display offers the community an opportunity to become familiar with its campus history,” he added. “We welcome visitors to stop by to see this historic piece.”

Obata will not be present at commencement, but will be featured in a video produced by University Marketing and Communications. Obata is a St. Louis native and a co-founder of HOK, the largest United States-based architecture-engineering firm.

Security Enhanced at SDM's Science Building

Video surveillance equipment is scheduled to be installed at the School of Dental Medicine’s newly renovated classroom in building 279, the Science building, on the Alton campus.

The classroom includes a simulator table for the anatomy classes and is located next to the existing testing center, which is already monitored. The cameras are scheduled to be installed before the summer term and will enhance the overall security on campus.

In accordance with Section II (F) of the University’s Video Surveillance Policy, Vice Chancellor for Administration Rich Walker has approved the installation of the additional security equipment.

"Carnival of Music" for children ages 2-5

5:45-6:30 p.m.

Children are compulsive music makers. They hum while they play, sing along with music in the car and love the opportunity to use wooden spoons and pots from the kitchen as drums. That’s why they will absolutely love Carnival of Music. They will develop comfort with instruments and their ability to play them, increasing their likelihood of playing instruments as they get older. The music and activities in this unit will invite and expand their natural tendency to sing and move, allowing the development of a strong musical foundation for future enjoyment and pursuit.

First child registration fee is $75 with each additional child at $25 each. All class & digital at-home materials are included with the camp fee. One digital at-home materials package per family. The non-refundable class & digital at-home materials fee is due in full with registration form and confirms your space in class.

At least one participating adult must accompany the enrolled children in the summer camp class. Please feel free to contact Ellen Singh with any questions, at esingh@siue.edu or ext. 2839.
