The event will also feature graduate student poster presentations, a Scholarly Activity SLAM, speed networking, the Paul Simon Outstanding Teacher-Scholar Award Luncheon which will acknowledge 2017 awardee Dr. Kristine Hildebrandt, Chancellor’s Researcher Reception and more.

Summer and Fall 2017 Course Offerings are Now Available for the Interdisciplinary Minor in Urban Studies

The Summer and Fall 2017 course offerings for the interdisciplinary minor in urban studies are now available at siue.edu/artsandsciences/urbanstudies (under “Current Course Offerings”).

Encompassing coursework in 12 different departments, the urban studies minor is dedicated to the cultivation of knowledge and skills pertaining to urban issues at the local, national and global scales.

If you know of any students interested in pursuing the minor, please have them contact Dr. James Hanlon in the Department of Geography at jhanlon@siue.edu

If you are interested in promoting the minor to students in your program and courses, promotional material is available upon request.

STEM Center Journal Club's Next Topic Discussion, March 23

The STEM Research Center is starting a new series of article discussions on ethics in STEM education. Join us for great, informal discussions on this topic!

March 23: "Socioscience and Ethics in Science Classrooms: Teacher Perspectives and Strategies" (Sadler et al., 2006).
Following up on the question of "why" is the question of "how." Georgia Bracey will be leading this discussion on ethics in STEM classrooms from the perspective of the instructor and what approaches make the most sense.

March 30: "Connecting Past with Present: A Mixed-Methods Science Ethics Course and its Evaluation" (Semendeferi et al., 2016).
Finishing out this series of discussions, Dr. Sharon Locke will lead a conversation on the effectiveness of teaching ethics and STEM together. Taking a look at one particular example course from the University of Houston, we will talk about the practical applications of previous weeks' discussions.

Plan to Attend 10th Annual Cougar World Games, March 23

SIUE Campus Recreation will host the 10th Annual Cougar World Games:

The Cougar World Games will challenge, inspire and bring together diverse student groups and organizations to SIUE students, faculty and staff.

For the fourth year, the “interaction zone” will be available during the event. This activity is designed to provide an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to dialogue and share information about their culture, countries of origin or outside organization.

Currently, there are commitments from such individuals from India, Serbia, Greece and Nigeria, to name a few. 

Campus Recreation is looking for volunteers to engage with students in the “cultural interaction zone.” If you would like to volunteer or know students, faculty, staff or organizations that would like to, please contact Natalie Hawkins, assistant director of Campus Recreation at nrosale@siue.edu or call 618-650-3242. 

The Cougar World Games is a special event designed to promote diversity, understanding and acceptance between groups with different cultures, backgrounds and ethnicities through participation in various recreational activities offered across the globe. The basic concept allows students to visit various stations depicted as continents, while learning about culture, sports, music, ethnic foods and more.

University Staff Senate Summer Scholarships Available, Submission Deadline March 24

The University Staff Senate is accepting applications for its Summer Scholarship.

The University Staff Senate has established a fund to provide scholarship awards to qualifying SIUE students. To be eligible for consideration for a scholarship award, you must meet the following criteria:

You must be the son, daughter, grandchild, spouse, or civil union partner of a presently employed or retired civil service (excluding non-status) or professional staff employee (excluding appointments of less than 50 percent and term appointments of less than six months) of SIUE.

You must meet admissions requirements for undergraduate study at SIUE.

The scholarship award will be applied to your University account for the semester. This award will be reported to the Office of Student Financial Aid to be considered in evaluating your overall financial aid package. Should this amount combined with other awards or payments cause a credit balance on your account, a refund check will be mailed to you from the Bursar's Office.

SIUE makes it easy to apply for scholarships quickly online!
Through the SIUE scholarship management system, all students can browse and apply for more than 450 scholarships available in the various schools, departments and units at SIUE. This system also offers information on various external or outside scholarships available as well.
To browse all scholarship opportunities and awards, visit siue.academicworks.com.  
To begin a scholarship application, follow these steps:
1. Login at siue.academicworks.com/users/sign_in with your e-ID and Password. You must have already been accepted to SIUE and received your e-ID and password.
2. Fill out the general scholarship application. The system will search for scholarships and awards you may be eligible for. For some, you will automatically be entered into the applicant pool and others may require you to answer additional questions.
3. Continue to check the system regularly as new scholarships become available at different times, also be sure to browse our “external” scholarship list that provides information and direct links to outside scholarship websites.

If you meet the eligibility criteria above, the software will direct you to the Staff Senate Summer Scholarship page. You are responsible for contacting the University Governance Office to ensure your application packet is complete. You will be notified of the decision of the Scholarship Selection Committee.

SIUE to Host Student Rural Health Careers Forum, March 25

A Student Rural Health Careers Forum will be held at SIUE:

The Forum will showcase the many career paths available for in-demand professionals with backgrounds in business, healthcare and information technology. It will feature panel discussions with top healthcare administrators, clinicians, graduate students and faculty members.

The SIUE Graduate School, Illinois Rural Health Association (IRHA) and Illinois Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Network are hosting the event. Registration is due by Friday, March 24 at ilruralhealth.org.

The application fee will be waived for prospective undergraduate and graduate students who apply to SIUE at the event.

Students are invited to serve as a Cougar Guide for The SIUE Experience!

Students must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and a minimum of 24 semester hours at SIUE by the end of Spring 2017 semester. Visit siue.edu/experience for the full position description and to apply online.

"Diversity Among Adversity" is Theme for Mass Communications Week, April 3-6

SIUE's Department of Mass Communications will focus on the theme “Diversity among Adversity” for its 2017 Mass Comm Week:
Monday-Thursday, April 3-6.

The program features a series of talks, panel discussions, films, and Q&A sessions on controversies ranging from the place of the press in politics, journalistic coverage of minority groups, the refugee issue and emerging media trends.

A stellar cast of international and national academics, practicing journalists, filmmakers, and post-graduate students will share their expertise in a week, that will dig into the challenging issue of diversity, conflict and inclusion.

Apply Now for STEM Center's Faculty Research Fellowship Program

The SIUE STEM Center announces its FY18 faculty research fellowship program.

This is a competitive fellowship, open to tenure-track or tenured faculty members, to engage in undergraduate education research aligned with the mission of the STEM Center to innovate ways to engage students in STEM. The successful applicant will be a faculty fellow with the STEM Center beginning in summer or fall of 2017, during which time the applicant will conduct a faculty-initiated research project.

To support the faculty member’s research, the STEM Center will pay for one course release during the academic year, and upon completion of the project, the fellow will be funded for travel to one state, regional or national conference to present the findings of the study.

School of Dental Medicine Hosts 2017 Research Day, April 11

The School of Dental Medicine invites the SIUE campus community to attend the 2017 SDM Research Day on Tuesday, April 11 on the Alton Campus. The day's events will feature a keynote address, a student table clinic competition and a vendor fair.

Dr. John Sorensen is the keynote speaker. Sorensen is a professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry, associate dean for Graduate Studies, director of the Biomimetics Biomaterials Biophotonics Biomechanics and Technology laboratory (B4T), and director of research for the Graduate Prosthodontics Program at the University of Washington School of Dentistry, Seattle.
