|
|
|
|
|
Kindermusik will offer its Spring classes beginning March 25.
To register, visit Kindermusik.
Classes offered inlcude
Sing & Play" 4-week class for 1 and 2 year olds
Get ready to sing, play and move with your little one in this high-energy music class designed for children under two years of age. This new Kindermusik curriculum focuses on your child's beginning movements to help build the muscles your baby needs to walk, vocal development to help nurture your child’s speaking and singing voice. With a mix of both parent-child joint activities and child-focused activities, you’ll be able to join right in on all the singing and dancing while also getting the chance to observe how your older baby or toddler learns on her own.
April theme: Rain or Shine
Up the water spout, down the water spout, you know how it goes. We'll use our senses to explore the sights, sounds and sensations of sunny days, rainy days and all the other kinds of days in between.
May theme: On the Town with Bear
Lace up your sneakers, we're going out on the town! We'll visit the city and see what there is to see, then head out into the country to check that out, too. Bear will, of course, go over the mountain and go a-yodeling, too. Come along! You never know what adventures you'll have when you're On the Town with Bear!
Tuition cost is $75 and is due by today for April classes and Monday, April 10 for May classes.
April class dates and times:
9 a.m. Saturday March 25 and April 1, 8 and 22
10 a.m. Thursday March 23, 30 and April 6 and 13
May class dates and times:
10 a.m. Thursday April 20, 27 and May 4 and 11
“Laugh & Learn” 4-week class for 2-4 year olds
Each week, we combine your preschooler’s natural love of music, storytelling, and imaginative play with age-appropriate activities that introduce early music concepts and foster independence, social and emotional skills, language growth and self-control. We also connect you with other parents who share in the wonder of parenting a preschooler.
April theme: In My Garden
The sun is shining, birds are singing, insects are buzzing and critters are sniffing, wriggling, chirping, hopping and burrowing. We’ll buzz like bees, fly like butterflies, and sing like birds to discover the hidden delights of our backyards through listening, singing, movement and pretend play.
May theme: Animals a-Dancing
Get ready for lots of ribbity-hopping, trumpety-stomping and oinkity-rolling! Animals a-Dancing uses the movements and sounds of frogs, elephants, and pigs to emphasize how many movements you can make with your body and how many sounds you can make with your voice. You will love moving every which way while singing the songs of our animal friends!
Tuition is $75 and is due by today for April class and by Monday, April 10 for May classes.
April class date and times:
10 a.m. Saturday March 25 and April 1, 8 and 22
11 a.m. Thursday March 23 and 30 and April 6 and 13

Attend the STEM Center Journal Club, New Series Starts March 16 |
|
|
The STEM Research Center is starting a new series of article discussions on ethics in STEM education. Join us for great, informal discussions on this topic!
Noon
Thursdays, March 16, 23, 30
Vadalabene Center, Room 1304
March 16: "Teaching Anthropogenic Climate Change Through Interdisciplinary Collaboration" (Todd & O'Brien, 2016).
This discussion, led by Dr. Carol Colannino-Meeks, will be an introduction to the topic of teaching ethics by addressing the question of why instructors might combine ethics and STEM. Anthropogenic climate change is an excellent entry point as it demands an understanding of the moral implications of climate change as well as the scientific details of this topic.
March 23: "Socioscience and Ethics in Science Classrooms: Teacher Perspectives and Strategies" (Sadler et al., 2006).
Following up on the question of "why" is the question of "how." Georgia Bracey will be leading this discussion on ethics in STEM classrooms from the perspective of the instructor and what approaches make the most sense.
March 30: "Connecting Past with Present: A Mixed-Methods Science Ethics Course and its Evaluation" (Semendeferi et al., 2016).
Finishing out this series of discussions, Dr. Sharon Locke will lead a conversation on the effectiveness of teaching ethics and STEM together. Taking a look at one particular example course from the University of Houston, we will talk about the practical applications of previous weeks' discussions.
Anyone interested can contact Colin Wilson at colwils@siue.edu for a copy of any of the articles.

8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Saturday, March 18
Morris University Center
More than 250 regional students from grades 5-12 participate in the SERC. Projects take advantage of a child's natural curiosity, stimulate the imagination and encourage independent critical thinking, all while enabling students to understand that science is an integral part of life. The competition helps students advance their thinking, confidence and interest in STEM.
To be successful, the SERC requires more than 200 judges. Experience in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) is preferred, but not required. Judges training, a continental breakfast and light lunch will be provided on the day of the event.
Click here to register as a volunteer judge!
