The Summer and Fall 2017 course offerings for the interdisciplinary minor in urban studies are now available at siue.edu/artsandsciences/urbanstudies (under “Current Course Offerings”).

Encompassing coursework in 12 different departments, the urban studies minor is dedicated to the cultivation of knowledge and skills pertaining to urban issues at the local, national and global scales.

A minor in urban studies will help prepare students to be informed, thoughtful and engaged participants in an urban world by providing a broad program of study encompassing the social, cultural, geographical, historical, political, economic and planning dimensions of cities and urban life. A wide range of careers are available to students with a strong foundation in urban studies. Please visit the program website for details.

If you know of any students interested in pursuing the minor, please have them contact Dr. James Hanlon in the Department of Geography at jhanlon@siue.edu

If you are interested in promoting the minor to students in your program and courses, promotional material is available upon request.

Attend today’s public event introducing Madison Historical: The Online Encyclopedia and Digital Archive for Madison County, Ill.

10:30 a.m.
Today
Morris University Center, Conference Center

The innovative digital archive is transforming the historical experience, using 21st century technology to display 20th century history, and inviting the public to be content creators.

Madison County Regional Superintendent of Schools Robert Daiber, EdD, is leading the project. It is being developed and managed by SIUE College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Historical Studies associate professors Jeffrey Manuel, PhD, and Jason Stacy, PhD, Stephen Hansen, PhD, faculty emeritus and former interim chancellor, along with undergraduate and graduate students.

Madison Historical offers the first formally recorded history of the county since 1912. During the launch event, organizers will demonstrate its interactive nature and expand on the opportunities it presents for professional development. Attendees will have hands-on opportunities to explore the site.

Project goals include digitally highlighting the physical collections to foster public interest in visiting local museums and historical societies. It will also serve as a valuable resource for local teachers and students, who can incorporate local history into their teaching and learning by using materials from the website.
