Dr. Cristina Ortiz, University of Minnesota, Morris.

9:30 a.m.
Thursday, Feb. 16
Peck Hall, room 2405

Rural spaces, and especially immigrants in those spaces, are often invisible both quantitatively and qualitatively (in terms of recognizing their contributions in a community). Thus the phrase, "they don't show up."

It is easy to assume that people in small towns know one another, but the physical proximity of small town life does not necessarily result in meaningful, cross-cultural interactions or understanding. In fact, people often unwittingly or unconsciously perpetuate the racialized and gendered inequalities of the transnational labor force in their non-work-related community activities.
