Dr. Shelley Price-Williams Elected Advising Graduate and Professional Students Chair for NACADA

Shelley Price-Williams, PhD, coordinator of Student Services and Transitions, was elected as the Advising Graduate and Professional Students Chair for NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising.

Price-Williams will assume her leadership role at the end of the 2017 NACADA Annual Conference being held in October in St. Louis. She will serve in this position until October 2019.

NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising was chartered as a non-profit organization in 1979 to promote quality academic advising and professional development of its membership to ensure the educational development of students. Since that beginning, NACADA has grown to 14,000 members consisting of faculty members, professional advisors, administrators, counselors, and others in academic and student affairs concerned with the intellectual, personal, and vocational needs of students. In addition, NACADA is the representative and advocate of academic advising and those providing that service to higher education.

NACADA hosts an annual conference each fall that has attracted more than 4,000 attendees, as well as 10 regional conferences, and intensive study of advising through Administrators' and Assessment Institutes, special topic seminars, and two Academic Advising Summer Institutes held annually.

NACADA also provides a network and professional identity for the thousands of faculty, full-time advisors, and administrators whose responsibilities include academic advising.

Informational Meeting Feb. 8 and 9 for Commit to be Fit Competition

The Exercise Science Club is hosting its annual “Commit to be Fit” competition for all faculty and staff. This friendly competition encourages SIUE faculty and staff to be active by competing as teams of 5-7 to accrue active fitness minutes each week.

Some things to know:

• Form your own team with your co-workers or friends on campus (teams do not have to be from within the same department).
• Graduate and teaching assistants are welcome to participate.
• If you DO NOT have a team, you will be randomly assigned.
• Each team will be assigned a student coach from the Exercise Science Undergraduate Program or the Exercise Physiology Graduate Program to help with goal setting, motivation and accountability.
• The competition officially runs from Monday, Feb. 27-Friday, April 21.
• The last day to sign up is Wednesday, Feb. 15.

• The email should include ALL team members' first and last names, as well as their primary email to be used for this competition.
• Coaches will begin emailing their teams during the week of February 20, after all teams have been registered!

Meetings Scheduled to Address Presidential Executive Order Restricting Non-Immigrants and Immigrants on SIUE Students and Employees

The Office of the Provost and the Office of International Affairs will hold two informational forums to address the issues surrounding the Presidential Executive Order signed on Jan. 27, about restricting entry from non-immigrants and immigrants to the U.S., and the effect on SIUE international students and faculty.

We know that this Executive Order has caused turmoil for many SIUE international students and faculty. SIUE is closely monitoring this issue. The Office of the Provost and the Office of International Affairs will keep students and faculty informed of major developments impacting immigration status.

International students and faculty are welcome at SIUE.

SIUE values global citizenship and inclusion, including providing a welcoming and supportive environment as well as respect for individuals, difference and cultures. All international students and faculty are highly valued regardless of their country of origin, religion or culture.

If you are unable to attend the forum, you may come to the Provost’s Office or Office of International Affairs, and we will ty our best to answer your questions.

SIUE Marketing and Communications Wins Seven Collegiate Advertising Awards

The SIUE University Marketing and Communications Department received seven awards from the 2016 Collegiate Advertising Awards competition. SIUE enhanced its standing from a year ago when it received five total awards, including four gold for the 2015 competition.

With entries judged on creativity, layout/design, typography, production, quality and overall effectiveness, SIUE earned gold awards in five categories:

  • The SIUE Chancellor’s Report in the annual report category
  • East St. Louis Marketing Brochure in the brochure-multiple pages category
  • Summer Concert Series Signage in the poster/display series category
  • SIUE Cougars Wrestling Poster in the sports/specific category
  • Taggables in the TV/video/advertising/PSA-series category

The 57 Things to do at SIUE series received a bronze award in the social media marketing category. The SIUE marketing and communications website also earned a bronze in the website design category.

The Collegiate Advertising Awards is an elite national program seeking to recognize today’s most talented marketing professionals for outstanding excellence in all forms of advertising, marketing and promotion specific to higher education products and services. The Collegiate Ad Awards allows institutions’ marketing and advertising efforts to compete against similarly sized colleges and universities from across the nation.

Register Now for Louis Sullivan Architectural Ornaments Conference

World-renowned architect Louis H. Sullivan (1856-1924) will be the inspirational focus of a film screening and a free full-day conference at SIUE.

The Louis H. Sullivan Architectural Ornament Collection at SIUE is the largest known collection of physical ornaments from Sullivan constructions. The events will feature this unique academic resource and showcase its significance to individuals interested in architectural history, design and preservation.

The free day-long conference will provide attendees with an increased awareness of SIUE’s collection, an understanding of the vital role played by Richard Nickel in the existence and documentation of the Louis Sullivan architectural ornament collection, and a greater knowledge of past and current efforts made to preserve these, and other Chicago historic and cultural artifacts and buildings.

Keynote speakers include Mark Richard Smith, John Celuch, Inlandesign director and first curator of the SIUE Sullivan Collection, and Ward Miller, executive director of Preservation Chicago.

Registration is limited to 100 with the deadline Friday, Feb. 17. Free parking is available for the first 50 non-SIUE registrants. The conference is sponsored by the SIUE Graduate School Conferences and Workshop Program, Friends of Lovejoy Library, SIUE’s Arts & Issues and Preservation Chicago.

Registration to the conference will also include the opportunity to purchase half-price tickets to Arts & Issues’ presentation of “Louis Sullivan: The Struggle for American Architecture." Student attendance is free but tickets are required.
