SIUE East St. Louis Center Learning Resource Center Hosts Grand Opening Today

The SIUE East St. Louis Center (ESLC) has reopened the library on campus and expects it to soon become a critical resource and gathering place for the public.

The SIUE East St. Louis Learning Resource Center will hold weeklong events during its grand opening from today-Friday, Feb. 10 at the East St. Louis Higher Education Campus, Building B, 601 James R. Thompson Blvd., East St. Louis. Currently, hours are from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Some highlights of grand opening attractions include:

8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. – “Display of Voices” poster on display
Noon-1:15 p.m. – Viewing of Project 231 documentary

Tuesday, Feb. 7:
10-10:30 a.m. – Story time with Septembre Lewis, ESLC Upward Bound Math and Science counselor
Noon-1 p.m. – Tiffany Lee, assistant professor at St. Louis Community College, author of Legendary East St. Louisans: An African American Series

Wednesday, Feb. 8:

Students Can Join the Kognito Challenge Today-Feb. 17 and Earn Free iCare Stuff

Students are on the front line of recognizing distress among their peers. Distress can lead to anxiety, depression, poor academic performance and even a weaker immune system.

Being an observant friend and effective listener can have more of a positive influence than one may realize. SIUE has an online training simulation that will assist students to better identify, support and refer stressed friends to support services on campus. 

Students can complete Kognito training for FREE, print a certificate of completion and bring it to the iCare table to choose a free prize.

Senior Dental Students Offer Free Screenings Today

All graduating senior dental students must take a patient-based clinical licensing examination prior to being eligible to apply for a license to practice dentistry. The examination for the Class of 2017 is scheduled for Monday-Tuesday, April 3-4.

We need your help in advance of this licensing exam to complete this requirement. You can help by participating in in a FREE dental screening.

FREE screenings will be offered from 5-7 p.m. at the School of Dental Medicine on the Alton campus on the following dates:

Monday, Feb. 27
Monday, March 13

A FREE dental screening, including select x-rays, will be offered to patients willing to participate and who are 16 years and older.

If accepted as a Board Examination patient during your screening visit, you must be willing to come to the dental school and receive treatment on a select board examination day—either April 3 or 4. There will be NO CHARGE for the treatment you will receive during the Board Exam.

No appointment is necessary for the FREE screenings offered. Please bring a photo ID. Free parking is available in the patient parking area (off of Annex Street).

SIU Main Dental Clinic is located at 2800 College Avenue (free patient parking off of Annex Street) in 
Alton.

Informational Meeting Feb. 8 and 9 for Commit to be Fit Competition

The Exercise Science Club is hosting its annual “Commit to be Fit” competition for all faculty and staff. This friendly competition encourages SIUE faculty and staff to be active by competing as teams of 5-7 to accrue active fitness minutes each week.

Some things to know:

• Form your own team with your co-workers or friends on campus (teams do not have to be from within the same department).
• Graduate and teaching assistants are welcome to participate.
• If you DO NOT have a team, you will be randomly assigned.
• Each team will be assigned a student coach from the Exercise Science Undergraduate Program or the Exercise Physiology Graduate Program to help with goal setting, motivation and accountability.
• The competition officially runs from Monday, Feb. 27-Friday, April 21.
• The last day to sign up is Wednesday, Feb. 15.

• Once you have your team together, assign a team captain and decide on a winning team name! An award will be given for the most creative team name.
• Team captains should email committobefitsiue@gmail.com with their team name in the subject line or their last name, if they are signing up as an individual to be assigned to the team.
• The email should include ALL team members' first and last names, as well as their primary email to be used for this competition.
• Coaches will begin emailing their teams during the week of February 20, after all teams have been registered!

Discounted Membership for New Fitness Room Fee for Faculty and Staff

Campus Recreation is now offering a special membership yearly rate of $60 for SIUE faculty and staff to access the new fitness room located in the Student Success Center, Room 0206.

This reduced rate allows for access only to this new satellite workout space.

Faculty and staff who wish to or are currently taking advantage of our full Student Fitness Center membership can gain access to this space at no additional charge.

Hours of the Fitness Room will follow the hours of Morris University Center.

"Introduction to American Sign Language and Deaf Culture"
This noncredit class will provide an overview of American Sign Language (ASL), it’s basic vocabulary, structure, syntax, and grammar. Students will also learn conversational/cultural behaviors necessary to hold a beginning level conversation in ASL, with deaf/hard-of-hearing users of the language.

Vote Early and Often in SIUE's Healthcare Diversity Summer Camp's Bid for Arcus Award

The St. Louis Regional Chamber has yet again honored Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in its Arcus Awards program.  This year, the University’s Healthcare Diversity Summer Camp is a finalist in the Inclusion and Talent Attraction category.

The fourth annual Arcus Awards, presented by RubinBrown LLP, will honor companies, organizations and institutions that are operating to make the St. Louis region a better place to live, work and invest. Winners will be announced live on stage. Networking begins at 5 p.m. and the program ceremony is at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23 at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at the Arch.

Vote for your business of choice at arcusawards.com. Voting lasts until noon, Wednesday, Feb. 22.  Businesses are competing in their respective categories and all nominees compete for the People’s Choice Award.
