SIUE Department of Philosophy Enhances Careers, Hosts Events

This Sunday at 9 a.m. on Segue on WSIE-FM 88.7, SIUE College of Arts and Sciences Dean Greg Budzban hosts Judy Crane, PhD and chair of SIUE’s Department of Philosophy, to discuss the department’s additions to the program and some of its upcoming events. Crane has been teaching at SIUE since 1999 and became department chair in 2012. When discussing the philosophy department’s future, Crane says the department has put forward paperwork to add a specialization in law, as well as an interdisciplinary minor in science, technology and medicine studies.

The philosophy department will host the regional High School National Ethics Bowl, an all-day event set for Saturday, Jan. 28 at 8 a.m. Now in its third year, the Ethics Bowl will host 10 teams from seven high schools, mostly from the region. The department also hosts the annual Fritz Marti lecture on Friday, March 24, featuring Boston College’s Dr. Richard Kearney, who specializes in the philosophy of religion.

Tune in to WSIE 88.7 FM every Sunday at 9 a.m. as weekly guests discuss issues and events on SIUE’s campus.

Volunteer for Ask Me!

Student Affairs is continuing its efforts to welcome both new and returning students to campus on Monday, Jan. 9.

Please consider volunteering 30 minutes of your time to stand in key locations across campus with a cool “Ask Me!” sign and button to answer questions and get students pointed in the right direction for their classes or to conduct business.

If you can help, please sign up for a shift here. Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Consider Volunteering at Textbook Services for Book Rush

As things will begin to get lively again on campus next week, a few volunteers are needed!

If you have an hour or so and would consider volunteering time at Textbook Service during Spring 2017 Book Rush, your help would be appreciated. Your job will be to assist students in finding their new books via their "pick list" and in general to be a friendly face.

It is also a great opportunity to touch base with students and welcome them back to SIUE!

If you can give time, please click here to sign up for a time.

Donate to the Career Development Center's Professional Clothing Drive

We need your help! Ready to do a little cleaning in your closet?

Each year we have students that are in need of professional attire for interviews, career fairs, networking events, and practicum/Co-op/internship experiences. Unfortunately not all students have the resources to obtain the appropriate attire for these occasions.

The Career Development Center is taking donations of professional attire items from through January 31 in preparation for its spring recruiting season. We will, of course, take ongoing donations outside of this timeframe, but this will be the first major push to get as many initial items as possible.

We are accepting both men’s and women’s attire. All items need to be in good condition and already clean and ready to be given to students.

Items can include:
  • suits
  • dresses
  • skirts
  • dress pants/khakis
  • sweater sets
  • polos
  • blouses
  • belts
  • ties
  • anything that could be worn for a professional event with employers
  • anything that would be appropriate as a starting point for a professional wardrobe
We are hoping to get a variety of sizes and options so that we can make this service available to any student in need.

Items can be dropped off in the Career Development Center (Student Success Center 0281) during regular business hours.

Please contact the Career Development Center at 618-650-3708 with any questions.
