Faculty and staff at SIUE have been working constantly to provide resources for students any way they can in light of the COVID-19 outbreak that took over in March. SIUE has been able to provide funding to students with emergency costs due to the pandemic through the CARES Act. Students eligible for the CARES Act are classified as being enrolled in at least one face-to-face credit hour in the spring 2020 semester, being in good academic standing, and have filled out FAFSA for the 2019-2020 academic year while also being eligible for the Title IV federal financial aid. SIUE students who are not eligible for funding through the CARES Act may seek emergency funding through the SIUE Student Emergency Assistance Fund through the SIUE Foundation.
SIUE Health Services has continued to provide on-groud and telemedince services. “It is important for us to remain open this semester in order to support students who may experience physical and mental health challenges in this unique environment,” said Riane Greenwalt, Director of Health Services. “Health Service remains committed to the health and safety of our community. We are still here for our students, and we are privileged to take care of them.” . Students are facing uncertainty and anxiety during this unprecedented time, and the department is here to support them. The office continues to collaborate with the Illinois Department of Public Health and Madison County Health Department, to assess COVID-19 presence in Illinois and the potential impact to students. Health Service has collaborated with several units across campus to provide information on staying healthy during Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker’s Stay-at-Home orders – including washing your hands, knowing the symptoms, being physically active, eating intelligently, having quality sleep and performing self-care.
Additionally, SIUE Campus Recreation was able to assist students with completing internships requirements for the undergraduate exercise science program and graduate exercise physiology program. “With the leadership from our assistant director of recreation, Natalie Rosales, Campus Recreation was pleased to offer assistance to these students. We value partnerships with Academic Affairs and welcome the opportunity to help students learn and grow" stated Campus Recreation Director Keith Becherer. The students developed virtual prgramming that could be delievered across social media platforms that helped promote exercise, outdoor recreation, nutrition and wellness.
