“I enjoy being able to be a counselor, mentor and providing public safety education to the students,” said Hoyd. “I also talk to them about their rights as citizens and about exploring various career paths, including going into law enforcement.”
“At my high school in south suburbs of Chicago, I remember there was a security officer whom I enjoyed talking to, and he helped me,” continued Hoyd.
Initially, Hoyd had wanted to become a lawyer, but later decided upon the field of law enforcement. He has worked at SIUE with the Police Department for the last eight years and was the first African American promoted to sergeant.
Hoyd earned a master’s in public administration and policy analysis in 2021 and a bachelor’s in criminal justice in 2015, both from SIUE.
