SIUE Revives International Night to Celebrate Global Cultures
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Office of International Affairs is bringing back a beloved campus tradition, International Night, on Monday, March 17, at 5 p.m. in the Meridian Ballroom of the Morris University Center. This vibrant celebration of cultures will feature student and faculty performances, cultural booths, and a diverse global menu— offering the campus and surrounding community a chance to experience traditions from around the world.
Historically organized by the International Student Council, International Night was once a highly anticipated event at SIUE. Recognizing its significance, the Office of International Affairs has worked to revive it, thanks in large part to the efforts of International Student and Scholar Services graduate assistants Meenakshi and Sandesh Pokharel, and a dedicated team of student volunteers.
“International Night was a staple of campus before, so International Affairs wanted to bring it back,” said program advisor Sara Duft. “This is a chance for people to showcase where they come from and to experience new things.”
The night offers an exciting lineup, including traditional dance and song, stand-up comedy, and performances from students, faculty, and local cultural groups. A global menu will feature cuisine from regions many of SIUE’s international students call home.
Beyond the entertainment and food, International Night carries deep significance for SIUE’s international students.
“International Night is a chance for students, faculty and staff to showcase their culture and celebrate with others,” said Duft. “Many international students do not travel home during their studies, which means they may miss important family events or holidays. This allows them to bring a piece of home to campus and share that with others. It is an opportunity for people to learn and experience new things, meet new people, and let loose for the night.”
Aligning with SIUE’s commitment to global engagement and cultural exchange, International Night is a testament to the University’s diverse student body.
“Events like International Night not only give space for students to celebrate their unique and rich traditions, but also allow the campus and local communities to deepen their understanding and appreciation of the many cultures represented at SIUE,” said Amy Nusser, lead immigration specialist.
The event is open to all students, faculty, staff, and community members. Tickets are available via Hometown Ticketing, with prices set at $5 for SIUE students and $10 for faculty, staff and community members.
As the event’s performances, booths, and student involvement evolve each year, International Night remains a dynamic, ever-changing celebration of cultures.
“Every International Night looks different, which I love,” added Duft. “While some of the elements may be the same, you will never see the same International Night twice.”
More than just a cultural festivity, International Night is an opportunity for connection and inclusion.
“International Night is about community—coming together to have a meal, meet new people, and learn something new,” said Nusser. “Anyone is welcome, all cultures are honored, and everyone belongs.”
“Join the SIUE community in celebrating the return of International Night and experiencing the many cultures that make our University unique.”
