Southern Illinois University Edwardsville honored its graduating students in style at the biannual Always a Cougar celebration on Thursday, Dec. 12. Held the day before commencement weekend, the festive event welcomed the newest cohort of fall graduates into the SIUE Alumni Association while providing a well-deserved break after final exams.

Hosted by the Office of Alumni and Donor Relations, the celebration featured live music from DJ Phat Mack, light refreshments, photo opportunities, and a champagne toast recognizing the hard work and accomplishments of the graduates. Faculty and staff joined the celebration, adding a sense of community and shared pride to the occasion.

“Our graduates leave SIUE equipped with the knowledge, skills and determination to make a difference wherever they are headed next,” said Cathy Taylor, ’15, associate vice chancellor for University Advancement and executive director of Alumni and Donor Relations. “As graduates, they automatically become members of the SIUE Alumni Association and part of a network of more than 120,000 Cougars who are transforming communities and industries across the globe. We are proud to celebrate their accomplishments and excited to see the impact they will continue to make.”

For Kira Wrigley, who will graduate on Saturday, Dec. 14 with a Bachelor of Science in accounting, the event marked a moment of reflection and excitement.

“It’s so surreal. It’s been a long time coming, but I think I’m ready,” said Wrigley.

Wrigley credited much of her success to her professors, particularly Marc Ortegren, PhD, assistant professor in the School of Business, whose teaching style challenged her and fostered growth. She also encouraged fellow students to embrace connections, sharing her personal journey of overcoming shyness.

“Get out there if you’re shy like me,” said Wrigley. “There’s no reason not to be. I used to be the most introverted, most shy person ever, but I had people approach me, and that helped me approach other people.”

Wrigley’s journey at SIUE continues after Saturday’s commencement. She is enrolled in SIUE’s Graduate School for spring.

The Always a Cougar reception reflects SIUE’s dedication to cultivating lasting connections among students, faculty, staff and alumni. By celebrating graduates’ achievements and formally welcoming them into the alumni community, the University ensures they remain “Always a Cougar.”
