Rep. Kevin Schmidt Holds Job Fair for SIUE East St. Louis Center and Metro East Residents
More better-paying jobs are needed in the Metro East, according to State Rep. Kevin Schmidt, R-Millstadt. Schmidt’s legislative office held a job fair that was available for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville East St. Louis Center (ESLC) staff and program participants and the public on Friday, Nov. 3 in Multipurpose Room on the Wyvetter H. Younge Higher Education Campus.
“We need to encourage employers to come to this area, hire local people and pay good wages,” said Schmidt. “We need good skilled labor jobs in this area. College is good, but I’m a big supporter of the trades.” Schmidt attended SIUE for two years and later graduated from Logan University in Chesterfield.
“We were honored to have Rep. Schmidt and his team on the Wyvetter H. Younge Higher Education Campus,” said ESLC Executive Director Timothy Staples, EdD. “This event linked our community to quality employment opportunities.”
“It was great to have the room full of employers and community members, and to see people connecting around a wide range of job opportunities,” added ESLC Deputy Director Mark Dochterman, PhD.
More than 35 employers were on hand at the job fair. Some of the businesses included: Allnex, Craftsman Industries, CNB Bank, Fed Ex, Hospital Sisters Health System, Illinois Central School Bus, Illinois State Police, Illinois Heartland Library System, SIHF Healthcare, SIUE and Veolia Environmental Services.
The job fair also offered the following free classes:
- Creating a Resume that Gets You Noticed
- Interviewing with Confidence
- How to Navigate the State’s Hiring Process
“The job fair was a great success,” said Schmidt. “The purpose was to create opportunities for employers and employees. Everyone needs employees right now, and I’m the middleman.”
