Voyager Scholarship Awarded to SIUE Student
Lauren Morgan, a junior, criminal justice major at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, has been named a recipient of the Voyager Scholarship. The scholarship, created by Barack and Michelle Obama and Brian Chesky, co-founder and chief executive officer of Airbnb, help shape young leaders in public service.
Morgan has reassurance and confidence of her educational and career goals as a recipient of this award. She aims to represent marginalized groups by opening a pro bono practice and serving individuals who need her help and representation in court.
“As a black woman, I take it personally when I see marginalized groups not getting the due process they rightfully deserve as it's written in the constitution,” said Morgan. “When I received the scholarship, it gave me reassurance that my plan is feasible. I can and will change the world. I'm excited to be a part of a cohort composed of people with similar passions.”
As a scholarship recipient, Morgan will receive up to $50,000 in financial aid, a $10,000 stipend and free Airbnb housing for a summer work-travel experience, an invitation to a summit for all recipients, and networking opportunities.
After completing her education at SIUE, Morgan plans to become a lawyer, making her dream of impacting individuals lives through criminal justice reform become a reality.
The Voyager Scholarship is open to students entering their junior year of college at an accredited four-year college or university in the U.S., who have demonstrated a financial need, and who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients.
