SIUE Faculty, Student Win Top Prizes at Regional Conference
The Central States Communication Association (CSCA) 2023 annual conference that took place from Wednesday, March 29 to Sunday, April 2 at Hyatt Regency St. Louis At The Arch in St. Louis, Missouri ended on an upbeat note for SIUE’s Department of Applied Communication Studies (ACS) in the College of Arts and Sciences. Professors Scott Sellnow-Richmond, PhD and Deborah Sellnow-Richmond, PhD, and a master’s student, Sadiq Abiodun, won coveted awards for their papers. The conference explored the theme Intersections, Transitions and Silenced Voices.
SIUE was represented by six faculty members, 12 graduate students and 21 undergraduate students. They presented papers on a range of subjects including communication education, strategic communication, organizational communication, popular culture and rhetoric, and sport communication.
Scott Sellnow-Richmond and Deborah Sellnow-Richmond won a Top Paper prize for their work, Service-learning Pedagogy and Experiential Learning in Organizational Communication Studies.
“The conference is a great opportunity for students to meet scholars in the communication discipline, share their unique research and ideas, and learn more about what research is being done in a variety of sub fields,” said Deborah Sellnow-Richmond. “The strong presence SIUE has also demonstrated the quality of the programs the university offers and encourages others to consider continuing their education here.”
The spotlight was also shared by master’s student Abiodun, who was named winner of the Millar Award for Top Student Competitive Paper for his work, 'The Truth About Hunger': Engaging Influencers for Fundraising Activities.
"The award-winning paper was one of those works one does without expecting anything in return,” said Sadiq. “Such recognition is a manifestation of the inherent excellent qualities of SIUE products, which I am proud to be associated with. I see this award as a call to do more and am happy to take up the challenge, especially with the support of the faculty members with whom I have built a strong connection with over the years as a graduate student here.”
SIUE has long enjoyed a strong presence within CSCA, which serves as the regional association for scholars in the communication discipline.
