SIUE Homecoming Helps Cougar Spirit Shine
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville has kicked off its 2022 Homecoming, an annual celebration of the University’s past, present and future.
“There have been many fun homecoming activities so far,” said Maddie Schurman, graduate assistant for Campus Activities Board, who is responsible for planning many of the SIUE Homecoming Week events. “We encourage students to attend the events as a way of building community.”
Event highlights include the 21st annual chili cook-off and bonfire on Wednesday, Sept. 21. Thursday, Sept. 22, students gathered on Dunham Hall lawn for a petting zoo and showcased their talents via the chalk mural contest outside the Morris University Center. Thursday concluded with pumpkin painting at Revolution Campus Ministries’ fourth annual Fall Fest.
“I love being out here to see the drawings come to life,” said graduate student Alexis Hutchins, of Harvey, during the chalk mural activity. “Seeing everyone drawing and collaborating is super fun. To have so many people on campus and for homecoming to be in full effect is exciting.”
“The Fall Fest is amazing,” added senior Jamirah Meeks, of St. Louis. “As an art minor, I love painting. Everybody comes up with their creative ideas. This is a great opportunity to relax and have fun.”
“My time at SIUE has been great so far,” added first-year student Courtney Perkins, of St. Louis. “I want to make sure to do as many homecoming activities as I can!”
Homecoming activities continue throughout the weekend with Alumni Hall of Fame honorees gathering for a “A Night Among the Stars” on Friday, Sept. 23. Saturday’s events include the Cougars Unleashed Homecoming Run, Cougar Fan Zone tailgate, and the Homecoming Soccer Game.
