SIUE’s Fan Selected for Top Pharmacy Academic Leadership Fellow Program
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy’s (SOP) Jingyang Fan, PharmD, assistant dean of academic affairs and clinical professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice, has been selected to participate in the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Academic Leadership Fellow Program (ALFP) for the academic year 2022-23.
Fan is among 35 rising leaders in the year-long leadership enrichment program that commences in September. The program supports and contributes to the development of leaders in academic pharmacy and higher education. It also provides an opportunity for Fellows to expand relationships with peers and colleagues from other institutions and within their own college and university.
“I am incredibly honored to be selected for the 19th cohort of the AACP ALFP,” said Fan. “I am excited to embark on this journey, explore my potential, and connect with other emerging leaders in the pharmacy academy.”
As someone who discovered her teaching passion early in pharmacy school, Fan took a step farther during residency to pursue a clinical faculty position at the University of Southern Nevada. She became vice chair of the curriculum committee and led the creation of the Integrated Patient Care Seminar to help students integrate their knowledge and skills in a block curriculum. Shortly after joining SIUE in 2008, she began serving on the curriculum committee and later as chair, where she spearheaded several curriculum-related task forces.
In 2013, Fan chaired the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accreditation self-study task force. In her assignment, she collaborated with various departments and offices within the school to prepare for the comprehensive accreditation visit.
“My experience in pharmacy curriculum development, as well as my passion for educational technology, will hopefully add to the collective experiences that others bring to the ALFP,” Fan said. “I am not afraid to make changes and rock the boat. I like to think outside of the box and find creative ways to enhance student learning.”
ALFP participants will be exposed to in-depth leadership development, team building and networking, exploration of issues critical to pharmacy and higher education, and self-assessment of leadership style and strengths, among many other leadership advancement activities in an interactive and application-based session.
As a pioneer who stays on the cutting edge of instructional technology trends among her colleagues, Fan is optimistic about the values that accompany such fellowship and intends to leverage the opportunity to advance pharmacy teaching and learning.
“In order to advance the profession of pharmacy, we need leaders to explore uncharted territory and influence and motivate others to join,” said Fan, who is also the AACP chair-elect of Technology in Pharmacy Education and Learning special interest group. “By being part of the ALFP and learning from both seasoned and budding leaders, I will become more involved in national organizations and influence and shape the future of pharmacy education.”
