The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Police Department’s distracted driving enforcement throughout April resulted in 26 handsfree law violations, 13 speeding violations, one suspended driver, 13 expired registration, one disobeyed stop sign, three uninsured motorists, and one violation for no brake lights.
“Distracted Driving Awareness month allowed the SIUE Police Department to bring a heightened awareness to stop motorists from engaging in this deadly behavior,” said Lt. Adam Severit.
The SIUE PD joined forces with state and local law enforcement and highway safety partners for this enforcement effort. Using a phone in anything other than handsfree mode in Illinois is not only dangerous, but also illegal. SIUE PD encourages drivers to break the cycle, and drop it and drive.
The Illinois distracted driving campaign is funded with federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
