Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Engineering’s (SOE) Amardeep Kaur, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been named chair of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) St. Louis section.

IEEE is the world's largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. The St. Louis section has been in existence for over 100 years and currently has more than 2,000 IEEE members.

Her one-year term as chair began January 1, 2022. Additionally, Kaur was promoted to a two-year term as chair of the student activities committee (SAC) of IEEE region 5. Region 5 spans across 12 Southwestern states with 23,000 higher grade members and more than 3,600 student members.

Kaur’s responsibilities in these roles include:

• Organizing professional development workshops and other events for professional members of the St. Louis section.
• Organizing student activities and providing opportunities for students from different sections to interact and compete.
• Working with student branches to provide support in pursuing professional activities on their campuses.

“My first interaction with IEEE was as an undergraduate student,” Kaur said. “I simply wanted to get involved with the organization who sets the standards for the electrical engineering industry worldwide. At the time, I did not know I would get to meet and work with many driven volunteers who work at different levels of the organization to create a better engineering world.”

Kaur’s involvement with IEEE has been ongoing, and she’s held numerous leadership roles since 2014, including SAC advisor, SAC chair and section treasurer.

“IEEE brings together engineers of all levels, students and professionals, from all over the world,” Kaur said. “One of the most satisfying experiences of being involved in IEEE has been working with students and hopefully motivating them to become more aware of the world around us to not only become better engineers but also better human beings.”
