SIUE Student-Athletes Extend Academic Excellence Streak to 31 Semesters
SIUE student-athletes have extended their academic success streak to 31 consecutive semesters with a cumulative grade point average above 3.0. During the fall 2021 semester, Cougar student-athletes posted a combined 3.436 GPA, the second-highest mark the department has earned. It is the fourth consecutive semester that SIUE student-athletes have earned above a 3.4 GPA.
All 14 programs finished the semester with a team GPA above a 3.00 for the second semester in a row and the second time since moving to the NCAA Division I level.
"The dedication of our student-athletes and commitment to academic success continues to impress," SIUE Director of Athletics Tim Hall said. "Academic success is an expectation within our department. Our student-athletes live up to the expectation every day."
Three programs achieved record high GPAs since 2009: baseball at 3.432, golf with a 3.709 and tennis at 3.803, which also is the second-highest GPA for any program since 2009.
Tennis earned the department's highest GPA followed by golf. Women's soccer (3.646) and volleyball (3.628) rounded out the department's top four performers. Softball (3.596) and men's soccer (3.555) each eclipsed the 3.5 plateau in their programs.
A total of 64 total student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0, marking the most-ever to earn a 4.0. Additionally, 55 percent of SIUE student-athletes earned Dean's List honors, while 75 percent earned above a 3.0.
"I extend my gratitude to our academic staff as well as the faculty and staff within the University," Hall added. "Their work is vital to our success as a department, and I appreciate their continued dedication to our student-athletes."
The men's teams average GPA was a 3.315, which is the second highest to date and the women's team average GPA was 3.532 the third highest to date.
