SIUE’s Richard L. Millet Named Carnegie Council Fellow
Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs selected Dr. Richard L. Millet, a Southern Illinois University Edwardsville professor emeritus of history, as a fellow for the “Living Legacy of the First World War” Project.
Millett, who taught at SIUE from 1966-1999, is one of nine who will receive stipends and other support to pursue original research and writing for publication. The fellows will also conduct podcasted interviews and attend a conference at a location to be determined. The project is supported by a grant from the Richard Lounsbery Foundation.
Millett’s research topic is “The United States, the Western Hemisphere, and World War I: Forgotten Aspects.”
Millett is a research associate of the Center for International Studies, University of Missouri-St. Louis and an adjunct professor at the Defense Institute of Security Assistance Management. Millet is also vice-president of the Midwest Association for Latin American Studies and Senior Partner of the Millett Group LLC. He is the previous chair of military affairs at the Marine Corps University and has received the Perry Award for Excellence in Security and Defense Education from the Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies at National Defense University. Millet has published more than 100 items, with articles appearing in Foreign Policy, The Washington Post, and The New Republic, among others.
He graduated from Harvard and earned both master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of New Mexico. He did postdoctoral work at The Ohio State University and is a graduate of the Air War College. Millett also taught at the University of Miami, Saint Louis University, the Air War College, the Marine Corps University, Copenhagen Business School and four universities in Colombia.
