Theo Jamison, Katherine Dunham master instructor and former program director of the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville East St. Louis Center (ESLC) for the Performing Arts, lauded his one-time teacher during the Thursday, Sept. 21 opening of the “Katherine Dunham: A Life of Dance, Activism and Anthropology” exhibit.
Jamison also demonstrated moves crafted by the legendary dancer and anthropologist.
The exhibit, that consists of 30 panels of photographs of the dancer, educator and community activist and several cases containing her artifacts will be on display in the center of the library through Monday, Oct. 23.
“Madam Dunham was a gift to the world,” said Jamison. “She was one-of-kind.”
Jamison took the audience through several movements of the Dunham Dance Technique, which he taught for many years at the ESLC for Performing Arts.
