Frogner Earns Ashe Award from ITA
SIUE senior Mia Frogner has been recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as the Central Region’s 2017 ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award winner.
The Ashe Award is selected by taking into account a player’s tennis accomplishments, scholastic achievements, extracurricular endeavors, sportsmanship, leadership and character. The award is named after the late Hall of Fame tennis player and humanitarian.
“I am very excited for Mia winning this award, as it represents the pinnacle of success at the collegiate level,” said SIUE Women’s Tennis Head Coach Nick Mueller. “Mia is an outstanding individual who certainly is deserving of this honor.”
As the Central Region honoree, Frogner will be placed on a ballot to earn the national award, which will be announced at the NCAA Division I Championships next weekend in Athens, Georgia.
The Cougar senior helped SIUE to a 21-1 record this past season, including a perfect team mark during the regular season and Ohio Valley Conference Championships. A first team All-OVC selection, she finished the year with a 20-7 record in singles and 21-3 record in doubles with teammate Tiffany Hollebeck.
She helped the Cougars to a second straight NCAA Tournament appearance and second OVC Tournament crown.
Frogner represented the SIUE School of Business as the student speaker at the School’s 2017 spring commencement ceremony. She was named to the Dean’s List in each of her eight semesters and also appeared on the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll. She also worked as a member of the SIUE Student Athlete Advisory Committee and the Leadership Development Program.
