Toddlers Learn Sign Language at SIUE East St. Louis Learning Resource Center
Lara Jennings, director of the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville East St. Louis Learning Resource Center, spent the morning singing and signing the “ABC Song,” “How Are You” and other children’s tunes to toddlers from the SIUE Head Start/Early Head Start Discovery Center for Little Scholars.
Six toddlers mimicked Jennings in what was their first lesson in American Sign Language. Jennings also instructed the children in how to sign common commands like “please” and “thank you.”
“Today’s presentation is just one way we are highlighting the broad spectrum of what libraries can do for children, and the important role libraries play in early childhood literacy and learning enrichment,” Jennings said.
“I think the children enjoyed themselves, and so did I,” she added.
