Visitors Inspired, Immersed in Art during SIUE’s Annual Sculpture Walk
Approximately 300 community members, faculty and students learned the inspiration behind 12 student-designed and installed sculptures displayed across Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s campus during the 16th Annual Sculpture Walk held Friday, Oct. 7.
“As a student, I enjoy walking past these pieces every day,” said Breanna Blackwell, a junior chemistry major, during the walk. “It’s really cool to understand the artists’ back stories behind their work.”
The event was part of the “Sculpture on Campus” (SoC) program. During the walk, each participating artist offered background on his or her inspiration, design, fabrication and installation processes.
“This is one of the richest community outreach events we have, because it brings together community members, faculty and students, so that they can all encounter art,” said Greg Budzban, dean of the SIUE College of Arts and Sciences. “It’s wonderful to see, and provides perspective as we learn about each piece.”
“Not just seeing the pieces, but having the students take questions about their work, makes this a special event,” added Chancellor Dr. Randy Pembrook. “It gives them a moment to show off their piece and share their creative process.”
Following the Sculpture Walk, guests enjoyed a SoC Alumni Show in the Art Gallery of Art & Design West. Graduate student Carly Faye was awarded first prize for her sculpture entitled, "Decent People."
The newly installed sculptures will remain displayed on campus for one year.
