SIUE’s Greek Council Contributes to Make-A-Wish Foundation
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Greek Council Wish Makers has donated $8,500 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Cancer patient Stephen Burrows and his family appeared at the Cougars’ men’s soccer match Saturday, Oct. 17, against Evansville at Korte Stadium to officially accept the donation.
Burrows, a 17-year-old Fredricktown, Mo., high school student was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma Jan. 27, 2014, but is currently in remission from the blood cancer that affects the body’s lymph nodes.
SIUE Greek Council’s Wish Makers is a fundraising committee of SIUE fraternity and sorority members interested in contributing time and energy to help grant wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions that are sponsored by Make-A-Wish. The Wish Makers’ mission is to work together to recognize the importance of community service and philanthropy. The students fundraised for Burrows during the 2014-2015 academic year.
With the donation, Burrows fulfilled his wish to visit Atlantis in the Bahamas, because he likes Greek mythology, and Atlantis has a replica of the sunken city that anyone can explore.
The SIUE students will continue sponsoring a Make-A-Wish child every year. The funds raised are used to assist Make-A-Wish in granting the sponsored youngster’s wish.
