SIUE SigEp Chapter Awards $1,500 in Scholarships to New Students
The Illinois Eta Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon at SIUE annually awards a $1,000 scholarship and two $250 scholarships to new students who exemplify the characteristics of the Balanced Man Program: Sound Mind and Sound Body.
Conner McClain is the recipient of the 2015 Balanced Man Scholarship. He graduated from Carlinville High School with a 3.99 cumulative grade point average. McClain was a member of Student Council, Future Farmers of America, National Honor Society, mathematics team, Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering Team, Model United Nations debate team, the football team, the basketball team and was a cast member for school musicals. At SIUE, he received the provost scholarship.
Illinois Eta’s Alumni Volunteer Corp. President Lyle Ward established the Balanced Man Scholarship. It is funded by the donations of generous alumni. This year, the scholarship received over one hundred applicants. Fourteen finalists were honored and the three scholarships were awarded at the Balanced Man Scholarship Reception earlier in September.
Jonathan Cheatam was first runner-up. He graduated from Alton High School where he received the St. Louis Club of Cornell University Book Award and the AFJ ROTC Freedom Award. He was a member of Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Society, was a member of National Honor Society and ran on varsity cross country. Cheatam is in the SIUE Honors Program and received the SIUE provost scholarship.
Luke Molen was second runner-up. He graduated from Taylorville High School where he was the editor in chief of his school newspaper and received a number of awards for his writing. He was a member of National Honor Society, was inducted into the Illinois Junior Academy of Science, and ran track and cross country. At SIUE, Molen has already received numerous scholarships and awards.
The chapter will award an additional $4,000 in scholarships to active members at the annual Arete Awards Dinner in February.
