SIUE Cougar Volleyball Team Mixes Sustainability with Recreation and Fun
Members of the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cougar Volleyball Team donned homemade capes and took to two wheels Aug. 18 to utilize the University’s Bicycle Share Program. The cycling event built camaraderie and brought out their “inner hero.”
“We had great fun on our Cougar Volleyball Pride Bike Ride,” said Leah Johnson, volleyball head coach. “Volleyball athletes endure a lot of stress on their bodies, so bicycling gives us a low impact alternative to training. We wore capes to bring out the superhero in ourselves.”
The team of 14 young women, their volleyball staff and SIUE Sustainability Officer Kevin Adkins left The Gardens at SIUE and rode to Fiona’s Family Restaurant, 146 N. Main St. in Edwardsville for breakfast.
“Our ride was full of jokes and laughs,” said Johnson. “It was a great break from training but also a good team building activity that let us show our personalities in a different manner.”
“We plan on making our Cougar Volleyball Pride Bike Ride an annual preseason activity,” Johnson added.
